Aviation training for nationals

Sharjah Department of Civil Aviation and Sharjah Airport Authority are running an aviation training course for UAE nationals. Trainees will be offered jobs in either department if successfully completing the 90-day programme.

University tackles nurse shortage

A Bahrain-based medical university has opened a private nursing school in response to an acute shortage of nurses in the country, Gulf News reported. The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland-Medical University of Bahrain is the first non-government school to offer a Bachelors degree in nursing in Bahrain. Bahrain has been losing nurses to more lucrative positions in the UK and North America, according to medical sources.

U21Global business training

U21Global, an online graduate school, has partnered with the UAE's Centre for Excellence for Applied Training to offer companies in the region customised online graduate programmes. Drawing on resources from other partners, including Harvard Business School Publishing, programmes will include industry-related case studies from Harvard and other business schools.

Scholarships, more choice

An additional 100 foreign universities have been added to a list of places where Qataris can study on government scholarships, according to The Peninsula. Now numbering 400, most institutions are located in the UK. The government particularly wants more graduates in science and engineering.

Wharton School at Mina Seyahi

The Wharton School, a business school based at the University of Pennsylvania, is hosting its third annual admissions reception in Dubai today, Monday. The event will take place at Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort from 9.00 pm. The event will be hosted by the Head of Admissions, Thomas Caleel, as well as a number of regional alumni; prospective students will be able to learn about the school's MBA programme.

SMCCU at Ibn Battuta

The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding has opened a majalis in the China Court of the Ibn Battuta Mall so that visitors can learn about Arab culture and hospitality. The Open Doors, Open Minds initiative is open daily from 10am-1pm and from 8pm-midnight until October 23, and then after Eid, until November 7. Visitors to the majalis can also sign up for special mosque tours.

Zayed Uni fund aids students

The Zayed University's Student Financial Aid Fund has so far aided around 800 students since its inception in 2000. The fund, which relies heavily on donations, grants and charitable contributions, has handed out more than Dhs3m in total over the past six years. Around 688 students have had assistance in buying laptops, while other payments have included transportation costs and incentive awards.

Westminster gets CIFC award

The Dubai based Westminster School, a member of the GEMS school network, has been granted Cambridge International Fellowship Centre status. The CIFC status is awarded to an educational institution based on its conduct in examinations, quality of teaching and high performance levels at IGCSE AS and A-level exams. As a result of the award, a selected GEMs student will receive a three year higher education scholarship.

UAE rural schools get revamp

The UAE Ministry of Education is undertaking evaluation studies of rural public schools in certain parts of the country, reported Gulf News. Dr Hanif Hassan, the Minister of Education has said that some schools with poor facilities would be totally revamped. Residents in the remote Al Qor valley, for example, say they have been demanding new schools ever since the UAE was formed.

English for first years in Bahrain

English is set to be taught alongside Arabic to first year pupils in all of Bahrain's elementary schools from the 2009-10 academic year, reported Gulf News. English is currently taught from the fourth year in government schools, while in most private schools English is the actual chosen language of instruction. This has led to a big discrepancy in linguistic ability between graduates of public and private schools.

Fingerprints until December

The Fingerprints for Charity campaign has raised more than Dhs1m since its launch, reported Gulf News. The project, which is aimed at supporting children in Lebanon, is a joint effort between the Ministry of Education, the Watani Programme and the Red Crescent Authority. The RCA has now said that the campaign, which encourages school children to give Dhs1 and also school bags to charity, will be extended until December.

Toomah Scholarships awarded

Toomah Scholarships under a $200K fund have been awarded to 176 students in Lebanon for the 2006-07 academic year. The grants help pay tuition fees. The scholarship scheme was started by PepsiCo International in April 2006, and is managed in partnership with Lebanese non-profit organization Ajialouna.

Qatari students studying abroad on scholarships with the Supreme Education Council say their studies are being disrupted by council interference, according to the Peninsula. The main gripe is from students who say they were told to change their major mid-stream.

Sorbonne AD to start classes

The Abu Dhabi branch of the Paris-based Sorbonne University will open at its temporary premises on 8 October for the 2006-07 academic year, Gulf News reports. A permanent campus for 1,500 students will open sometime in 2007.
