Youth initiative website

The Dubai School of Government and the Wolfensohn Centre for Development at the Brookings Institution have launched a new website as part of their Middle East youth initiative. The site looks at the economic and social issues affecting youth in the Middle East and includes research in both Arabic and English. It also features interactive blogs, facts about youth exclusion and can be accessed at www.shababinclusion.org

DREI establishes centre

The Dubai Real Estate Institute (DREI) has launched an industry specific resource centre. The DREI Resource Centre will acquire, facilitate, deliver and disseminate industry-centric information to serve the various needs of the institute's faculty and students, as well as those operating in the wider industry. The centre will offer books and online resources as well as subscriptions to electronic databases including Emerald Insight and the Economic Intelligence Unit.

School bureau for Dubai

A School Inspection Bureau is to be set up within Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority. It will take responsibility for the supervision of the work of all establishments, including nurseries, which function in the emirate's education sector. The body will also establish quality standards and draw up reports on every school operating in Dubai.

Zayed gets new campuses

The UAE's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research is to establish three new campuses for male students attending the Zayed University, reported Gulf News. One of the new campuses is expected to cater to those students seeking to join the country's armed forces. No time-frame has been agreed for the opening of the new facilities which are likely to be located in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sweihan.

Qatar opens 64 schools

A spokesperson for the Supreme Education Council (SEC) in Qatar announced that council has opened 64 schools in various stages so far throughout the country, The Peninsula reported. He also said that in the following year 21 independent schools were opened and in the 2006/2007 academic year 13 more started, in addition to this, 18 schools in 2007/2008.

Iraq seeks Iran's aid on education

Khudayr al-Khuzai, Iraqi Minister of Education has called for more cooperation between Iran and his country in the field of science and education, reported Press TV. He also welcomed Iranian school construction benefactors to visit Iraq to explore the scope for their activities in his country.

DubaiPTG offers trading course

The Dubai Professional Trading Group (DubaiPTG) has launched a hands-on training course for those wanting to start a career in trading on regional and global financial markets. The programme, which begins in January and will be taught in English, will last for six months and there will be a total of ten trainees per course. DubaiPTG offers a high-tech trading room, risk management systems and dedicated leased line connections.

AUB sets up Atiyah Chair

The American University of Beirut (AUB) has established the Michael Atiyah Chair in Mathematical Sciences in the faculty of arts and sciences. The new position has been funded by a donation of $2m by the Simons Foundation and it is hoped it will attract leading professors and researchers. Sir Michael Atiyah won the Abel Prize in 2004 and was the President of the Royal Society from 1990-95.

Emirates chooses Plateau

Edutech Middle East has said Dubai's Emirates Group is to utilise Plateau's learning management systems. Emirates will use the systems to provide enterprise-wide online learning, while Plateau will also be used to track and improve Emirates' training effectiveness and performance. Edutech is the regional partner of the US based Plateau.

ARY jewellery academy

The ARY Academy of Gems and Jewellery, which is located at the Jewel Plaza Building in Dubai's Gold Souq, has been established by the ARY Group and opens its doors on January 5. The new institute will offer training in all aspects of the gold and precious metals trade. Dubai Knowledge Village has recognised its various diploma courses in the design, manufacture, assaying and management of gems and jewellery.

DWC links with DREI

Dubai World Central (DWC) is teaming up with the Dubai Real Estate Institute (DREI) in a long-term partnership which will lead to the provision of real estate education and professional development solutions for DWC employees. The agreement will allow DWC staff to attend graduate diploma or Master's programmes at the DREI as well as specially customised training courses. In return, DREI students will have access to DWC's facilities and projects.

Women set for UAE oil sector

The UAE's oil sector is set to see a major influx of female UAE national employees, reported Emirates Business 24/7. 219 female students are currently undertaking four year courses at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi and around 50% have already completed two years of their training. The students have signed agreements with their sponsor, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, to start work with them after graduation.

Kuwait penalises pregnancy

Kuwait's Ministry of Education has unveiled two new rules aimed at female teachers, following talks with the Civil Service Commission, reported the Kuwait Times. The ministry will not employ any teachers who are pregnant, while no female teacher will be permitted to get pregnant during her first year of service. The new stipulations will be added to employment contracts.

UAE President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan the UAE's economic boom is a reflection of the attention given to education, with a strong focus on the adoption of knowledge and technology as a basis for education development, reported Gulf News. In remarks mde on his behalf at the 3rd Global Knowledge Conference being held in Kuala Lumpur, Shaikh Khalifa said the Arab world has made a generous contribution to the birth of practical and scientific-based knowledge.

Dow signs two-year Arab Leaders deal

Young Arab Leaders (YAL) has received $2m dollars from the Dow Chemical Company as part of two-year partnership to leverage the YAL Global action programme. The program is based on establishing forums between decision makers from across the world to initiate greater understanding and cooperation. One of its main objectives is to support youth and provide them with the necessary tools that enables them to become successful leaders.
