Jordan to host MIT conference

Jordan will host the 4th Annual Conference of Learning International Networks Consortium (LINC) 2007, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-managed international initiative that began in 2001. The conference will focus on distance and e-learning. It will be the first time the event is staged outside the US.

IBF to hold educational conference

The Institute of Business Forecasting will debut its popular Supply Chain Forecasting & Planning Conference in Dubai for the first time on 6 & 7 November 2007. Sharjah to host 'education show'

The third edition of the Education Show, an event that features a host of undergraduate, postgraduate, and other higher study options from across the globe for UAE-based students will be held at Expo Centre Sharjah from November 12 - 15, 2007. UAE school inspection

The UAE's Minister of Education Dr Hanif Hassan has carried out an inspection of a number of schools in Dubai and Sharjah as part of a cleanliness campaign, reported Gulf News. Dr Hassan inspected the condition of laboratories, classrooms and gymnasiums prior to the start of the new academic year. Teaching staff return to school on August 26 to begin preparations for the arrival of students.

Al Quds starts registration

Al Quds College in Amman has commenced registration for the upcoming academic year following the release of the annual Tawjihi, or high school, results by the Ministry of Higher Education. The college offers a number of programmes including Applied Arts, IT and Library Diploma, Management and Finance, Medical Assistance and Engineering. Dubai Ramadan lectures

Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing is organising a series of Ramadan lectures, according to the local WAM news agency. The event will feature various Islamic scholars discussing a range of issues connected with the month of fasting. The lectures will take place in a special tent located in Al Twar.

Egypt signs up for Skoool

Intel has agreed to team up with Edu Systems International (ESI) to customize, deploy, and develop its skoool Interactive Learning and Teaching Technology program in Egypt. Under a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Education in Egypt, Intel and ESI plan to implement an Egyptian version of the Skoool Education Technology web tool to be termed skoool.eg for learning and teaching.

New Dubai aviation academy

The Emirates Group, in partnership with Western Australia's Edith Cowan University, announced the opening of the Centre for Security & Aviation Excellence, located at Dubai Airport Free zone. The centre, run by Transguard Education Academy, will offer programmes for security professionals, including those working in the aviation industry, plus other aviation-related training programmes.

DSO-GEMS set up 'Smart School'

Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA) and GEMS have partnered to set up the first technology- focused school in the UAE. ICDL to train Omani students

The Omani Ministry of Manpower and ICDL GCC Foundation, the governing body and certification authority of the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) program in the Gulf have signed an agreement to implement ICDL certification program and train more than 20,000 male and female students enrolled in the public vocational training centers and the technology colleges as well as the private training centers in Oman.

Iraqis join Qatar programme

Eight Iraqi students are to join the Qatar Foundation's Academic Bridge Programme at Education City for one year, from September. The curriculum will include English, mathematics, science and IT and the course will act as a transition between school and onward study at university. The Iraqi Ministry for Higher Education is sponsoring the students, and will continue to do so if they subsequently gain admittance to a university at Education City.

Emiratisation for Taqa

The Abu Dhabi National Energy Company, Taqa, is to allocate 40% of the jobs at its Abu Dhabi HQ to UAE nationals by late 2008. At present, around 20% of posts are filled by locals and this should be increased to 30% by the turn of the year. Taqa sees training and on-the-job experience as key attractions to prospective UAE national employees and has devised a company structure to reflect this.

UAE seeks best practices

The UAE's Education Minister, Dr Hanif Hassan, has said that his department is committed to creating an educational system in the country which is consistent with international best practices, according to agency reports. Dr Hassan added that he wanted to create a system in which both students and parents would be 'active players'.

Jordan supports Iraqi students

Jordan is to allow around 50,000 Iraqi students, the children of refugees, to join state schools after the summer holidays without the need for residency permits, reported the AFP. Education ministry official Mohammed Akur said the move was 'in response to the humanitarian situation the Iraqis are going through'. It is estimated 4m Iraqis have fled their war-ravaged country, including those who left prior to the US led invasion in 2003.
