The Emirates Academy is offering scholarship for next generation Emirati hoteliers. Part of Jumeirah, the Dubai based luxury international hospitality group and member of Dubai Holding is introducing a scholarship programme offering a 50% reduction in tuition fees for qualified Emirati students who are looking for an internationally recognised Bachelor degree in business and hospitality.

Beacon Education has announced its latest educational venture Greenfield Community School, has received candidate status from the International Baccalaureate Organization for its Primary Years Programme. Interest in IB programmes is growing in the UAE, said Beacon.

ASTF-Intel seek techno-preneurs

The Arab Science & Technology Foundation (ASTF) and Intel Corporation has launched the 2nd Arab Technology Business Plan Competition. According to ASTF President Abdalla A. Alnajjar, the competition intends to create more awareness on opportunities in technology startups, and develop technology business ideas, plans and startups and increase investments in Arab technology startups, and generate Arab investors' support.

UOWD hosts open evenings

The University of Wollongong in Dubai is hosting open evenings in Dubai and Abu Dhabi this month. The Dubai session will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Wednesday, August 8, from 6.30pm until 7.30pm, while the Abu Dhabi event will take place on Saturday, August 11, at the Hilton Hotel, again from 6.30pm until 7.30pm.

DM in Zayed Uni project

Dubai Municipality carried out three projects at the city's Zayed University in July as part of a $39.4m spend on 12 educational, housing, recreational and service development schemes, reported the local WAM news agency. The DM's work at the university featured a continuous education centre, a conference room and a gymnasium.

Dubai Education eyes expansion

Dubai Education, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Emirates Investment and Development Company, intends to expand its presence in the Mena region by setting up educational facilities in line with its new $32.6m Canadian University of Dubai. Tarek Niazi, Group CEO of Emivest, said Dubai Education will focus on academic and corporate training, vocational studies and research and development.

Search for teachers abroad

Bahrain's Education Ministry is being forced to search for teachers abroad to fill vacancies in government schools, according to Gulf Daily News. There are four hundred teaching positions open for the 2007-2008 academic year at government schools. There are thousands of Bahraini applicants but most of them were not qualified for the job, according to a senior ministry official.

$129m Iraq educational fund

Unicef and UNHCR have started a $129m joint fund to provide educational opportunities for Iraqi children living in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt. Around 500,000 Iraqi school age children are estimated to live in neighbouring countries. Jordan has agreed to give all Iraqi children in Jordan access to Jordanian schools.

KOC, Oklahoma study deal

The Kuwait Oil Company has signed an agreement with Oklahoma American University which will allow KOC engineers and geologists to study for PhDs in petro engineering research, the Kuwait Times reported. The university is reputedly one of the most specialised universities in the field of petro engineering in the US. The three-year programme starts in January 2008.

DREI, USC to work together

Dubai Real Estate Institute and the University of Southern California's School of Planning and Development have agreed to develop executive education programmes and training in real estate. DREI has similar partnerships with the UK's Reading University, the National University of Singapore and Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology.

DHCC, Boston agreement

Dubai Healthcare City has signed an agreement with Boston University which will see the establishment of an institute for dental research and education, as well as a dental health centre. The institute will focus on furthering dental research in the region and on training graduate dentists in a wide range of specialties. The training programmes will match those at the Boston University, School of Dental Medicine.

Jordan builds 37 schools

Jordan's Ministry of Education has finished building 37 schools across the kingdom, which will have a combined capacity of 33,000 students, reported the Jordan Times. The schools cost $41.2m and were established as part of the Education Reform for Knowledge Economy Programme. The schools should open early next year, while eight more are nearing completion.

Iraqi archaeology training

Jordan's Department of Antiquities, the Japan International Co-operation Agency and Unesco have launched a training programme for Iraqi archaeologists, reported the Jordan Times. Participants will receive practical training and attend lectures in order to learn about preservation methods before heading off to Iraqi archaeological sites. Jordan and Japan have previously worked together to give training in areas such as electricity, water resource management, education and culture to over 500 Iraqis.

Web warning from psychologist

Dubai based clinical and forensic psychologist Raymond Hamdan has claimed that too long spent surfing the Internet can negatively impact the development of a child's creativity, intuitiveness and 'development of cognitive skills', reported Gulf News. Hamdan stated that while there is nothing 'inherently wrong' with electronic media, parents should monitor their children's Internet use to prevent them accessing violent or sexually explicit material.

UAE admissions announced

Close to 11,000 Emiratis have gained places in universities and colleges for the 2007-08 academic year, Gulf News reported. The UAE University has admitted 2,513 students, 6,699 have been placed with seven Colleges of Higher Technology, 1,233 in Zayed University and 501 have been chosen for external research programmes.
