The principal of a Bahrain school denied that exam results were manipulated before being announced to cover up poor performance, Gulf Daily News reports. Pakistan School principal Majid Hussain said the school administration was not being dishonest when it announced a pass rate of 46% in the annual secondary school exams, saying that a number of students who still had to sit supplementary exams were not counted in the final pass percentage.
Qatar University will appoint 35 Qatari nationals as new faculty members in a bid to strengthen the local academic talent at the university. The 35 are currently finishing up their postgraduate studies at various local and overseas universities, with 24 of them completing doctorates, according to the Peninsula.

Saudi bank SABB is sponsoring four students to take MBA courses in the UK. Scholarships cover tuition fees, travel and daily expenses and graduates have no obligation to work for the bank after completing their studies. Forty-nine students have passed through the scholarship programme since 1997.

The UAE has donated 50,000 pounds to an English county after it hosted a training project, the WAM news agency reported. President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nayhan made the donation to East Sussex county in appreciation for it hosting the UAE Technical Training Project at the coastal town of Bexhill-on-Sea. The donation was announced at a graduation ceremony for a group of 11 military technicians.

Construction work on Aqaba's first university is expected to begin by the middle of 2008, the Jordan Times reported. The university will include a hotel and tourism college. A total of 11,000 new jobs are expected to be created in Aqaba as a result of the increase in tourism projects, an official was quoted as saying.
Twenty students have been selected for a Dhs30m scholarship programme supported by Nakheel and Zabeel Investments. Around 450 candidates applied for the scheme, called Bidaya. The students have university scholarships funded under the programme.

Saudis will be trained for jobs in electronics at a new institute being set up in Jeddah. The Electronics and Home Appliances Institute will initially take in 150 students for its two-year diploma, with capacity increasing to 500 later. The aim is to encourage more Saudis to qualify for jobs in the expanding electronics sector. Construction of the centre is expected to take 20 months.
Dropout rates in Bahrain's government schools are as high as 50%, according to Economic Development Board findings. More boys are discontinuing their education than girls. The figure was based on examination results conducted by various agencies in 2006, which also found that more than half of University of Bahrain students fail during their first two years, the Bahrain Tribune reported. The results were described as 'dismal' by one education reformer.
Bahrain's Ahli United Bank is running a two-month summer training programme for university students. The bank has chosen 41 Bahraini students from local and overseas universities based on academic performance. The trainees will be rotated through various departments in the bank.
First Security Group has opened a training centre at Dubai Gold & Diamond Park. The centre offers instruction in law enforcement, basic security training and military programmes, in addition to computer courses designed for security guards. The project is a joint venture with Specialist Training Australia, and all security guard training programmes are certified by Australia's West Coast TAFE, FSG said.

Bahrain Development Bank has agreed to finance the training of Gulf Air pilots. Under the programme, BDB will put $3.12m towards pilot training expenses. The Bahrain-based airline will employ successful candidates. The programme is an extension of the bank's educational financing scheme for nationals which it started in 2002.
Dubai's Knowledge Village has signed a memorandum of understanding with the US' Georgetown University Center for Intercultural Education and Development to set up in Dubai. The CIED Dubai centre will offer programs in business and trade, competitiveness and leadership, law and public administration and policies, and institutional development, quality and education.
