French-Qatari school to open

Lycee Voltaire, a Qatari-French partnership school, will open in September 2007, the Peninsula reported. The school will teach French, English and Arabic and Islamic studies with a focus on Qatari culture. The school is backed by the governments of France and Qatar.

UPS aids Safa's SA project

United Parcel Service has partnered with Safa School's project supporting local schools in Knysna, South Africa. Safa's Hands-to-Hearts project was set up in 2004 to help schools that educate homeless and orphaned children. UPS shipped toys, books and teaching aids which were collected by Safa teachers and pupils.

New teachers college for AD

A government-sponsored teachers college will be set up in Abu Dhabi, which could also have branches throughout the UAE, the Khaleej Times reported. The Emirates College for Educational Development will offer courses and certificates including undergraduate degrees and doctorates, the report said.

Gems new Dubai primary

Gems opens a new primary school in Dubai in September 2007. The Gems Jumeirah Primary City School will teach the English national curriculum to children up to Year 6. The catchment area takes in Sheikh Zayed Road and the Burj Dubai residential areas, Gems said.

E&Y to train acoountants

Bahrain's Labour Fund has awarded a $4.2m contract to Ernst & Young to train and certify Bahraini accountants, Gulf Daily News reported. More than 700 nationals will be trained under the scheme over the next five years. Officials said the scheme would address an urgent need for skilled accountants in the country.

Arabic studies at Beijing uni

China and Oman have established the Sultan Qaboos Chair for Arabic Language Studies at Beijing University, Gulf News reports. The aim is to promote research and study in Arabic language, literature, culture and history, as well as set up a scientific library in the Arabic language department at the university.

Etisalat programmes in Egypt

Etisalat Academy will run joint training programmes with the National Telecommunication Institute in Egypt, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two bodies. Courses will focus on technology, information security, e-learning and 3G networks to increase the skills of workers in various economic sectors.

$82.5m for research projects

The King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology will spend $82.5m on research projects and scholarships, Arab News reported. A research scholarship programme is supporting projects relating to sectors such as water, petrochemicals, electronics, genetic engineering and higher technology.

Qtel gives $1.5m for scholarships

Qatar Telecom has donated $1.5m to the Qatar Foundation's scholarship programme, the Peninsula reported. The Foundation provides scholarships to students in Education City. The grants cover educational expenses or research projects and run for an agreed period.

Pay deduction angers teachers

Bahrain's income tax scheme to deduct 1% from workers' salaries to pay for a state unemployment programme has angered more than 100,000 teachers who had 3% deducted from a three-month wage advance, the Bahrain Tribune reported. President of the Bahrain Teachers Society, Mahdi Abudeeb, said: 'This is is a big and unacceptable cut which comes at a time when there has been no revision of salaries by the Ministry of Education.'

Cisco DNRD training

Cisco will give free training to staff at Dubai's Naturalisation and Residency Department, enabling them to become Cisco Certified IT instructors. Under the Cascade training programme, these staff will then train their colleagues in areas ranging from basic IT to network set up. The deal is part of Cisco's NetAcad strategy to bridge the Middle East's IT skills gap.

DTCM summer students

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing has selected 62 UAE national students for its 2007 summer training programme which started yesterday, July 1, and runs until the end of August. The students have already undertaken a familiarisation tour which introduced them to the DTCM's various policies and training courses. As part of the scheme, they will learn about the tour guides programme.

Prizes for UAE nationals

UAE national students who achieve the highest marks in the General Secondary School Certificate examinations will be awarded a cash prize of Dhs100,000, a scholarship and a laptop, according to the local WAM news agency. The award has been introduced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, as an incentive for pupils to go on to further academic success.

More Omanis at uni

Dr Rawiyah bint Saud Al Busaidiyah, Oman's Minister of Higher Education, has praised the role that private sector higher education has played in enabling more Omanis to attend university, reported Gulf News. The minister said that 20.8% of school leavers went on to higher education in 2001-2, but, in 2005-6, the figure had risen to 31.2%. She said almost 17,000 students now attend private universities.

UAE agency seeks staff

The School Agency, established by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, is aiming to recruit 66 staff to fill positions in the newly formed Administrative Services Unit. A recruitment committee comprising 12 people has been formed and it will place the desire to deliver customer satisfaction as a key criteria in the selection process.
