Edutech hosts Robotics Olympiad

Edutech Middle East is hosting the second UAE National Robotics Olympiad at Dubai Men's College on 16 October 2007. Two winning teams will be selected to go on and compete in the World Robotics Olympiad 2007 in Taiwan 16-18 November. Competition is in two age categories of students: 16-18 years and 13-15 years.

DWTC, HCT deal

The Dubai World Trade Centre and Higher Colleges of Technology have agreed to work together to attract international academic conferences and events to the centre. 'The focus will be on events that help promote the UAE as a centre of excellence for research' according to Dr Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor of the HCT.

Riffa school work starts

Riffa Views Signature Estates has started building an international school at its development The Lagoons Estate. The Riffa Views International School is set to be completed in September 2008, with registration to commence in September 2007. It will initially admit pupils to Grade 5 and teach the American curriculum.

300 pupils get training trip

The Abu Dhabi Education Council will send 300 standout Grade 10 and 11 pupils to Canada and Australia for a six-week English language and IT course, the WAM news agency reported. The trip was initiated by Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is chairman of the council.

NBF scholarship plan

The National Bank of Fujairah has launched a scholarship programme targeting students who are enrolled at the Higher Colleges of Technology in the town. The scholarships will be awarded to three UAE national students every year. The initiative is part of the bank's ongoing Emiratisation policy, which has seen around 140 UAE nationals join the NBF.

UK unis attend Dubai event

The fourth Summer Gulf Exhibition for UK Education is being held on Tuesday, June 26 from 5.30pm-9.30pm at Knowledge Horizon, Dubai. A number of universities, colleges and organisations from the UK are participating in the event including the University of Kent, the University of Exeter, Queen Mary College, University of London and the British Council.

UJ to build new campus

The University of Jordan is hoping to build a second campus to help tackle the problem of overcrowding, according to the UJ's President Khaled Karaki and cited by the Jordan Times. Karaki also said he wants the institution to develop new faculties, with an emphasis on linguistics. He added that the university should also look to set up its own daily newspaper as well as radio and TV stations.

AAFM for Saudi

The American Academy of Financial Management has opened a new chapter in Saudi Arabia. The opening of the chapter coincides with the appointment of the Managerial and Financial Training Centre in Jeddah as the academy's formal education partner. Over the past couple of years, the AAFM has opened new offices and training centres in Dubai, Kuwait, Oman, Singapore, Malta and China.

Batelco IT scholarships

Batelco has sponsored IT training scholarships to four unemployed Bahraini girls, Trade Arabia reports. The girls will attend a six month Cisco Certified Network Associate course at Batelco's training centre. The four were nominated by the Ministry of Labour.

Bahrain school Cambridge certified

Bahrain's Arabian Pearl Gulf School has been certified by the University of Cambridge International Examinations, Gulf Daily News reported. The school can now offer a range of internationally accepted qualifications including Cambridge's International General Certificate of Secondary Education.

Master's in healthcare

The Arabian Gulf University in coordination with ESA Gulf has launched a part-time executive master's in hospital and healthcare management, the Bahrain Tribune reported. The 14-month programme has three parts: hospital management tools, hospital performance management, plus thesis. Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited university and proficiency in written and spoken English.

Scramble for Independent Schools

More Qatari parents want to send their children to Independent Schools, causing a rush for the limited places available, the Peninsula reported. Independent schools have a teacher-pupil ratio of around 20:1 compared with more than 30:1 in government schools. But long waiting lists mean many children are missing out on places.

Emirati pilots for Etihad

Etihad Airways' inaugural class of UAE national cadet pilots is to begin training at Al Ain's Horizon Academy. The 12 trainee pilots were chosen following extensive assessments during April and May which included comprehensive personality and English language tests, as well as aptitude and medical examinations. To become a first officer, a cadet will have to accrue 930 classroom hours and 205 flying hours in both single and multi engine aircraft.

Abraaj Capital has made an investment in Global Education Management Systems, an international education provider based in Dubai. The investment in GEMS has been made through Abraaj's Infrastructure and Growth Capital Fund. GEMS owns and manages a range of schools across the Middle East including Our Own English High School, the Dubai American Academy, the Cambridge International School and Our Own Indian School.

Dubai Culture Forum planned

The Dubai Cultural Council is to organise various events and workshops as part of a Dubai Culture and Art Forum, which will include theatre productions, films, music and activities involving science and literature. The forum is scheduled to take place over a period of eight weeks from June 26 to August 31 and will aim to attract the younger generation.
