Japanese scholarships open

The Japanese embassy in the Abu Dhabi is taking applications for a Japanese government-backed scholarship scheme, Khaleej Times reports. Scholarships are open to UAE nationals and are for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Air fares are covered and there is a monthly grant of about $1400.

English classes for maths, science

UAE public schools will start teaching maths and science in English as part of the ministry of education's 'Schools of Tomorrow' project, Gulf News reported. The programme will be launched in 50 public schools from August 2007. Other schools will be added later.

Abu Dhabi Uni new courses

Abu Dhabi University has introduced 18 mew courses including a doctorate in business administration, according to Gulf News. Other additions include bachelor degrees in management, finance, human resources, computers, electrical and civil engineering, construction management and health administration.

Finance training for graduates

A third group of trainees has started a three-month programme with the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance under the Graduate Recruitment and Career Development Programme, Gulf Daily News reported. The aim is to attract 100 graduates a year to the financial industry, according to a BIBF official.

UAE research hub plans

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the UAE's Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, has said that the $10bn Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation which was unveiled earlier this week will help the Arab world to 'bridge the technology gap' and enable the UAE to become a regional hub for scientific research, reported Gulf News. Al Nahyan added that the fund would also aid educational reform.

SCT in museum plan

The Supreme Commission for Tourism in Saudi Arabia has approved a five year plan for the development of the National Museum, reported Arab News. The scheme will look at the museum's collection and will aim to enhance its various educational and cultural programmes and activities. A consultative committee focusing on the museums and antiquities sector is to be set up in the kingdom.

$10bn Mohammed Foundation

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has launched the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, which will invest in education and knowledge-development in the region. The $10bn foundation will support research programmes and centres and will provide scholarships to students to attend universities and institutes.

Saudi targets IT skills

The Saudi Arabia General Investment Authority and the Medina Knowledge Economic City have signed agreements with the Computing Technology Industry Association. The tie-ups will see Sagia and KEC work with CompTIA to enhance IT skills in students and workers across the kingdom. CompTIA is to adapt two of its 12 IT certification programmes into Arabic as part of the arrangement.

Training centre for Hidd

The National Institute for Industrial Training will set up an institute in Bahrain's Hidd area which will offer vocational training. A first phase will a cost $2.5m and have a capacity of 400 trainees, the Bahrain Tribune reports. Ebrahim Abdula'al Group is the building contractor.

HCT ICDL summer training

The Higher Colleges of Technology will conduct ICDL training courses for 600 school pupils in the Abu Dhabi Educational Zone, the local WAM news agency reported. The summer training programme is aimed at preparing pupils for higher education studies.

Aldar to run leadership course

Aldar Properties has established an educational programme on leadership skills in joint venture with the University of Cambridge International Examinations and Knowledge Horizon. The Leadership Excellence Applied Diploma will be offered over two years. It will open with an initial intake of two groups of 25 students. Non-Aldar employees are able to enroll.

Sharjah Ruler funds UK uni

Sharjah's Ruler bin Mohammad Al Qasimi has made a $20m donation to the University of Exeter for its Arabic and Islamic institute, Gulf News reported. Dr Sheikh Sultan has a PhD from Exeter and has previously funded projects at the university.

Jordan's five-year plan

Jordan's government is drawing up a five-year strategy to develop higher education in the country, the Jordan Times reported. Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit said there will be a focus on the quality of education and vocational education programmes to help meet labour market requirements.

DKV, Netherlands deal

Dubai Knowledge Village and The Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education have signed an agreement to promote higher education links between Dubai and The Netherlands. The NUFFIC plans to set up a regional office at the DKV to promote Dutch institutions across the UAE. Dr Ayoub Kazim, Executive Director of DKV and Dubai International Academic City, said 11 of the world's top 200 universities are based in Holland.

UAE labour card change

The UAE's Ministry of Education has issued a circular instructing schools to pay the labour card fees of teachers working on their husband's or father's visa, reported Gulf News. The ruling, which comes into force immediately, reverses a similar circular released in 2000 which stated that the teachers should bear the costs. Teachers who previously paid their own fees are now wondering if they are entitled to a refund.
