In line with the latest directive on green buildings, Watt Stopper/Legrand and the Legrand Company have joined with the Middle East Centre for Sustainable Development (MECSD) to present an education programme in Dubai on green buildings and lighting controls.

The Emirates Foundation will today, Monday, play host to a group of 18 Truman Scholars from the US who are embarking on a UAE familiarisation trip from December 10-18. The scholars will visit Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah and will be accompanied by 12 Emirati 'Young Ambassadors'; the students will meet government ministers and business leaders. Only 65 Truman Scholars are selected each year out of thousands of applicants.

It is believed up to five students were killed in a fire that broke out at a campus of the Al Azhar University in the Nile Delta town of Zagazig, yesterday, Saturday, reported Reuters. The blaze started in a packed lecture theatre at the women's college and this caused a stampede which led to some students being crushed, while others leapt from windows. Around 100 students were injured in the incident.
The Dubai Real Estate Institute (DREI) has signed an agreement with the Centre for Real Estate Studies at the New York Law School (NYLS). The tie-up will enable the two institutions to develop a law graduate programme and to offer educational courses on the different legal aspects of the real estate business. The DREI and the NYLS will also work together to develop collaborative research initiatives and a student exchange programme.

Jordan has been placed 55th out of 129 nations in Unesco's Education for All - Global Monitoring Report 2008, according to the Jordan Times citing the Petra News Agency. The kingdom was the second highest ranked Arab country after Bahrain. Minister of Education Tayseer Nueimi said Kuwait followed behind Jordan in 60th place, while Palestine was in 69th place.
The Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation has announced that it will provide 100 scholarships to students who wish to pursue masters degrees, reported Gulf News. Candidates who are selected to receive the scholarships will be able to pursue a masters degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, and Public Policy at a number of leading universities. Nationals of the 22 member countries of the Arab League are eligible to apply.

Iran's education minister has resigned, the latest change to the cabinet of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ahead of elections next year, reported AFP. The official IRNA news agency added that Ali Reza Ali Ahmadi, currently head of the Iranian open university, is the likely successor.
Canadian University of Dubai has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with University of New Brunswick - the First English Speaking University in Canada. The schools will develop joint programs at undergraduate and graduate levels, and promote collaborative research. CUD students will also be able to transfer credits to UNB.

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has signed an agreement with the Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians (HMFP) in order to help strengthen clinical and scientific standards, reported Gulf News. The DHA and the HMFP will explore joint opportunities in education, training, research and clinical care. Last month, the DHA signed a deal to bring the Joslin Diabetes Centre to Dubai.

Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Education has signed an agreement with the British Council as part of its plan to improve English language teaching in government schools, reported Arab News. British Council consultants will review Saudi English language text books while a 'cascade training' programme will be rolled out for both male and female English language supervisors who will then, in turn, train around 30,000 teachers in government schools.

Saudi Arabia's King Saud University has signed a number of agreements with other international institutions as part of as bid to boost its selection of engineering courses, reported Arab News. The university also has plans to set up a centre of excellence. There are presently 110,000 engineers in the kingdom but 240,000 are needed to support the wide range of mega projects underway.

For the first time in the history of Saudi Arabia, a college is pioneering the introduction of physical education classes for some of its female students, Khalifa bin Saba the director of the University College of Jubayl told al-Watan newspaper. A college student said the new course entailed theoretical lessons in nutrition and physical movements, which were followed by a practical application in the gym, reported Deutsche Presse.

Dubai Education, a subsidiary of Emirates Investment and Development, has announced its second academic institution in Dubai, L'Université Francaise de Dubai, a part of Lyon Lumière of France. The new university campus will be located centrally in Dubai and is expected to open its doors to students in the forthcoming academic year.

The Dubai centre of the London Business School has been officially inaugurated, reported Emirates Today. The school began operations in December by offering an Executive MBA and has announced six more programmes aimed at top companies and executives. The school is based at the Dubai Financial Centre.

A group representing 42 UK universities is touring Gulf Cooperation Council countries to promote UK higher education. EDUKEX 200, an education exhibition began its tour of the region this month in Abu Dhabi then moved on to Dubai and is currently in Saudi Arabia, reported Arab News. The exhibition aims at attracting and giving advice to students about education programs in the UK, in addition to details of tuition methods, living costs, accommodation options and extra curricular activities. This year the UK admitted 500 Saudi students on Saudi state scholarships, and further expects this number to double in the coming year.
