Female Saudi Arabian students wishing to study abroad on the King Abdullah Scholarship Programme are turning to 'mesfaar marriages', or travel marriages, to bypass a rule forbidding them to leave the country without a male guardian, reported Arab News. But some Islamic scholars and educationalists claim the marriages are just for convenience and violate religious rulings, with one saying such students were surrendering their 'main role in life of being mothers'.
The Dubai Government Excellence Programme has conducted a workshop to train employees in charge of implementing the new customer complaints system in the public sector. Nearly 70 representatives from government departments participated, including a team from the e-Government division responsible for installing the system. The workshop included a presentation on the goals, various stages and tasks to be undertaken by departments to ensure effective implementation of the system.

A report in the latest issue of the McKinsey Quarterly has revealed that Gulf based companies are gaining access to advanced management skills and know-how via the acquisition of western firms. The paper reveals that buying foreign firms enables Gulf based firms to bypass the time-consuming need to set up such frameworks internally and offers a direct route to top-level input.
A five day conference entitled Insight Dubai which has been organised by the Dubai Women's College got underway yesterday, Sunday. The event, which will feature Mariam Mohammed Khalfan Al Roumi, the Minister of Social Affairs, is designed to provide female students from the UAE and 21 other countries around the world with international exposure and increase their global awareness.

The Ras Al Khaimah Education Company and the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Boston's Tufts University have appointed a board of directors to oversee their collaboration on education and health initiatives in the emirate, with a new campus slated for August 2008. The Abu Dhabi Chapter of the Centre for Information and Guidance India is to carry out differential aptitude tests on students to help them in their future career choice. The tests will be for Indian pupils in grades 9-12 and will take place from April 20-21. Experts in psychometric analysis from the CIGI headquarters in Calicut will conduct the tests and hold counselling sessions.
