Dubai Industrial Academy launched

Dubai Industrial City is to establish the Dubai Industrial Academy, which will serve as a dedicated vocational training centre. The city has teamed up with the UK based Technical Training Centre in order to develop the centre. The academy will offer a wide range of courses but will place emphasis on areas such as quality, health, safety and the environment.

Teachers seek wage hike

Teachers in Asian private schools in the UAE have urged the country's Ministry of Education to raise their minimum wage, reported Gulf News. At the present time, foreign private schools can pay teachers a basic wage of Dhs2,000 a month. A number of teachers have said they are finding it increasingly hard to make ends meet as rent levels rise, and many take on private tuition to supplement their wages.

Education Show in Sharjah

The third edition of the Sharjah Education Show opens today, Monday, at the Expo Centre Sharjah, reported Gulf News. The four day event will feature 70 educational institutes from both the UAE and abroad. The event is open to the public from 10am-2pm and from 5pm-9pm.

AUB develops new centre

The American University of Beirut (AUB) and National Instruments have joined forces through the establishment of the new virtual instrumentation centre of excellence at the AUB. The centre includes 14 teaching and research labs in the fields of electrical, mechanical and civil engineering. Virtual instrumentation allows users to create multifunctional and customisable test and measurement devices using a combination of modular hardware and software.

Dubai Cares winds up

The Dubai Cares charity campaign will wind up tonight, November 10, according to the local WAM news agency. The scheme, which was established to support the educational needs of more than 1m disadvantaged children around the globe, has already raised more than $270m in the eight weeks since its launch by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Dubai eyes expat scholarships

Dubai is considering offering scholarships to Emirati students and, for the first time, wards of long-time expatriate residents to pursue higher education in the emirate or abroad, reported Khaleej Times. Dr Warren Fox, Higher Education Consultant to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the educational body is drawing up several plans as part of the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 to develop an educated workforce.

Online education in UAE

K12 Inc., a technology-based education company, has announced its first international online private school in the UAE. The K12 International Academy is a tuition-based school that gives students from kindergarten through high school the flexibility to learn on their own schedule, at their own pace, and in a setting best suited for them. All full-time students who meet graduation requirements will receive an accredited high school diploma.

Arab education reforms urged

Major reforms are needed in Arab education curricula at all levels in order to keep pace with the current challenges facing the Arab world, reported Gulf News. Dr Saleh Ali Basera, the Yemeni Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, said the way to restore the Arab world's status is to reform its educational programmes and courses at all levels, starting from kindergarten all the way to university studies.

CUD in Lyon collaboration

The Canadian University of Dubai (CUD) has signed a collaboration agreement with France's Universite Lumiere Lyon 2 to initiate exchange programmes and to promote academic and research partnerships. The CUD, which is a subsidiary of the Emirates Investment and Development Company, already has a number of tie-ups with other European and North American universities.

Al Khaleej IPO opens

Saudi Arabia's Al Khaleej Training and Education has appointed Saudi Morgan Stanley as the consultant and underwriter of its initial public offering (IPO) which opens today, November 5, while the Saudi Fransi Bank will act as the manager. Al Khaleej is offering 30% of its capital in the IPO comprising 2.4m shares valued at SR675 per share. The offer period ends on November 12.

Etisalat behind IT conference

The Etisalat Academy and Sharjah Police are organising the fifth Middle East IT Security Conference which is to take place at the American University of Sharjah. The conference itself will be held from November 12-13, while training and workshops will take place from November 13-14. The conference will look at the role of law enforcement agencies in fighting cyber terrorism.

High female literacy in UAE hailed

The UAE's education system has been effective in boosting female literacy and education, reported Khaleej Times citing a report issued at the second regional conference for women parliamentarians in the GCC. The report said the female illiteracy rate in the UAE in 2005 was only 7.6% compared to 10% for men. Just 2.1% of UAE national women dropped out of educational institutions in the 2005-06 academic year, the report added.

Better Environment Award launched

The UAE's Ministry of Education (MoE) has teamed up with Shell to launch the Better Environment Award 2007-2008, which is aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues affecting the country. Schools are asked to submit project ideas on health, safety, and environmental themes before November 8, 2007. Participants would pick one of two subjects from each theme to use as the basis for their projects.
