The Knowledge Complex is a $10bn education initiative of the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation. It also include scholarships for young Arab professionals, online programme for women who have family, and loan programme for refugees to start small businesses.

Qatar Foundation is sponsoring the 'Discover Education City Roadshow', which begins today, reported The Peninsula. The show will cover Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Abu Dhabi and Dubai and will showcase the wide range of education and research institutions in the Education City.

Private schools in the UAE are being forced to employ teachers illegally because of government delays in issuing visas, reported Emirates Today. An official at the ministry of labor said most private schools have violated labour laws at some point, but he acknowledged that they cannot wait months for ministries to sort out visas and work permits.

Alfa B TV, the first ever dedicated International television channel for literacy, will be launched next year, said Rui Sancho Fernandes president of the channel during the New Arab Women Forum. Zain has inaugurated a lab for mobile telecommunications at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) as part of its ongoing support efforts to the education sector in Jordan. This lab is considered the first-of-its-kind across all universities in Jordan in terms of specialization and focus on mobile telecommunications.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has sanctioned the establishment of 17 new colleges in the kingdom, reported Arab News. The new facilities will include a design college for women in Dammam, a naturopathy college for women in Riyadh, an applied sciences college in Yanbu, a nursing centre in Qassim and a college for administrative and human sciences in Majmaa. The University of Women in Riyadh will also receive several new colleges.

Dr Ali bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi, the UAE's Minister of Labour, has said senior employees, including managers, will no longer need to have their academic degrees verified when renewing their labour cards, reported Gulf News. The move is for the benefit of those currently in senior positions but without appropriate qualifications. Degree verification, costing Dhs500, was instigated in January 2006 for anyone seeking a work visa.
