DIB $5.7m to Dubai Cares

The Dubai Islamic Bank (DIB) has donated $5.7m to the Dubai Cares educational initiative. The cash will be used to build and operate 15 schools in developing countries. The pledge takes the total amount of money raised to $228.5m according to the Gulf News; the sum is likely to rise further following a walkathon taking place in Dubai later this week.

NYU to open Abu Dhabi campus

Abu Dhabi officials and New York University have formally reached agreement to establish an Abu Dhabi campus of NYU, reported WAM. The tie up will be the first comprehensive liberal arts campus established abroad by a major U.S. research university. Mariet Westermann has been named to lead the new campus, which is set to receive students by 2010.

Olayan renews scholarship

Saudi Arabia's Olayan Group is relaunching the Suliman S. Olayan Graduate Fellowship in International Business for 2008-09, reported the Khaleej Times. Candidates are invited to apply for admission to the graduate programme at the United States-based Kelley School of Business at Indiana University to qualify for a two-year MBA scholarship. Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree (BA or BS) and satisfy the necessary requirements for Kelley's MBA programme.

Bill Gates praises UAE students

Three UAE University students who presented an innovative mobile learning project at the ImagineCup competition held in August in Seoul have received a letter of recogntion from Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates for their achievement, reported Gulf News. Students Ghalya Ali Al Manneim, Hayfa Ahmad Jarrah and Noura Al Daheri, won the competition for the Gulf and qualified the team for the world finals. The ImagineCup is widely considered to be the World Olympics in Information Technology.

Cairo to host science competition

The final round of the 'Made in the Arab World' competition, organised by the Arab Establishment for Science and Technology, will held in Cairo on November 3, reported Times of Oman. A total of 13 Arab countries will participate in the event, which is aimed at orienting research and development activities in Arab universities to tackle real needs and problems, and foster business-oriented results.

Human rights curricula urged

The Arab League has set up a panel to study the introduction of human rights as a subject in the school curricula of Arab countries, reports Qatar's local Arabic daily Al Sharq. Representatives of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Tunisia, the members of the panel, have been tasked with formulating a common framework for the Arab countries to implement the proposal. The project aims to spread human rights values among the younger generation in the Arab world.

Dubai Cares above $200m

Tatweer, a member of Dubai Holding, has donated $16.2m to the Dubai Cares initiative, which aims to help support the education of more than a million children worldwide. The fund has now raised around $220.3m since its launch just over two weeks ago, according to Gulf News. Dubai Sports City contributed a cheque for $2.7m yesterday, Sunday.

Unqualified teachers in Qatar

Kholode Al Obaidly, a PhD student at the UK's Birmingham University, has revealed that, via her research, only 36% of English teachers at independent schools in Qatar have appropriate qualifications, reported The Peninsula. Al Obaidly attributed the problem to the overall shortage of teaching staff in the country and said more Qatari nationals should be encouraged into the sector. But she conceded long working hours remain unattractive to locals.

ADIH ends internship

The Abu Dhabi Investment House (ADIH) has concluded its two month summer internship programme. Students from the UAE University, the American University of Sharjah and the UK's Cardiff University spent time working in various divisions at the ADIH, including private equity, real estate development, corporate communications, accounting and human resources.

Kuwait teacher shortage

Kuwait's Ministry of Education has begun utilising its male teaching staff to offer adult education to female students in evening classes, reported the Kuwait Times. The ministry has taken the step as there is a shortage of suitable female teachers in the country but a number of female students have already decided to discontinue their studies. The ministry has stressed that the male teachers chosen 'will be old'.

Law students to study Sharia

Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi has launched a new law programme that includes a course in Shariah, or Islamic law, reported Emirates Today. The first class of 30 law students has begun a three-year course of study towards a degree that will qualify them to practice in the UAE and France.

Dubai World has given $71m, the largest contribution to date, to the 'Dubai Cares' initiative launched earlier this month, reported Khaleej Times. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai World, said it is his company's corporate social responsibility to join the project and play a key role in achieving its objectives.

The Egyptian Tourism Federation has signed an agreement with Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration that will bring the expertise of one of the world's most highly renowned leaders in the field of hospitality education to Egypt. New University of the Arts

Emaar Education, a subsidiary of Emaar Properties, has unveiled a new program to promote arts education in the MENA region and the subcontinent. The University of the Arts, headquartered in Dubai, will create a network of campuses, each distinct and with its own identity but linked as an international networked university. The new university is part of Emaar Education's plans to open more than 100 educational institutions in locations close to and within its masterplanned communities.

Maritime City builds uni

Dubai Maritime City has commenced negotiations with the International Association of Maritime Universities regarding the construction of university in the Academic Quarter of the development. On completion, the Maritime Education University would offer an array of courses covering subjects like maritime law, maritime engineering management and IT in maritime. The 270,000 sqft university would also be affiliated to a research and development institute to assist students undertaking doctorates.
