Bahraini armband protest

The Bahrain Teachers Society is urging all teachers in the kingdom to wear black armbands for the first ten days of October as a protest against the limited pay offer from the government, reported Gulf News. The society said the gesture would express teachers' dissatisfaction with 'current working conditions and to ask for a better status'. The campaign coincides with International Teacher's Day.

GEMS SMS service

Global Education Management Systems (GEMS) is introducing an SMS information system for parents of students at the 25 schools it runs across the UAE, reported Gulf News. Parents will be able to text their children's student number and the specific information they require to a special number and they will receive a reply within minutes. GEMS said the service will provide details of attendance, exam grades, timetables and outstanding fees.

Literacy drive in Qatar

Qatar's Ministry of Education has launched a literacy programme for school 'dropouts', reported the Peninsula. The scheme is being undertaken in 11 schools across the country but only GCC nationals and those whose mothers are Qatari are allowed to attend. Admissions close on October 10.

Michigan uni to DIAC

Michigan State University (MSU) is to set up a non profit-making regional branch campus at Dubai International Academic City (DIAC). MSU in Dubai will offer a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes spread across various subjects including media, communications, public relations, computer engineering, construction management, family studies and business cognates.

Iftar for Ajman school

An iftar event, entitled 'Read to Reach', is to be held today, Saturday, to raise funds for underprivileged children attending the Manar Al Eman Charity School in Ajman, reported Gulf News. A similar iftar event last year raised around Dhs100,000 for the school.

The British University in Dubai triumphed over a range of international universities with a winning bid to host the 17th International Conference on Management of Technology next year in the emirate. The conference aims to tackle key issues arising from the application of technology in the knowledge economy. It will attract renowned academics and practitioners from all over the world in the area of IT management.

Dubai grants Dhs30m to students

Dubai's ruler has directed that Dhs30m be set aside for more than 3,000 students across the UAE so that they can stay in school, reported Emirates Today. The grant, issued by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, will go to Emirati and resident children, including orphans and students who come from needy families.

Jordan launches centre in EU

Prince Hassan of Jordan has unveiled the Centre for European Studies that will bring together institutions of learning in Europe and the Middle East to allow students to explore the complex relationships between and within these regions, reported the Jordan Times. The centre, which will be open to Jordanian, Palestinian, and Israeli students, will offer classes at the universities of Trier, Dusseldorf and Berlin.

Al Fahim Group has acquired a 24 per cent interest in Knowledge Horizon, an international knowledge transfer organisation based in Dubai, reported Gulf News. Knowledge Horizon offers professional qualifications through its association with international professional bodies such as The Cambridge International Diplomas from the University of Cambridge International Examinations.

Dubai Cares exceeds target

Over Dhs250m has been pledged so far to the Dubai Cares campaign, surpassing the Dhs200m target less than one week after the program was launched, reported Gulf News. The campaign, which aims to educate one million children from poor countries, has received several large contributions from local businessmen, includinig Dhs100m from Sunny Varkey, Chief Executive of Verkey Educational Group, and Dhs5m from Dr. Derek Bokhta, General Manager of ET Kerney Limited and Micky Jagtiani, Chief Executive of Landmark Group.

YAL, Keppel tie-up

The Young Arab Leaders (YAL) and Singapore's Keppel Corporation have launched an Arab Asian internship programme. The three month long programme, running from June-August 2008, will take ten students from the Arab world to ten Asian countries in which Keppel operates to experience employment in an Asian environment and culture. The interns will learn about sectors such as sales, marketing, finance and controlling and IT.

Bahrain teachers strike threat

Teachers in Bahrain are campaigning for a 30% hike in their salaries and are threatening to go on strike if their demands are not met, reported the Gulf Daily News. The Bahrain Teachers Society has called off industrial action prior to a meeting with MPs this week but it is warning disruption will occur if no agreement is reached; the government has offered teachers a 10% pay increase.

AD school fee hike

Parents of pupils attending the Sun Rise English Private School in Mussafah in Abu Dhabi are refusing to pay increased tuition and transportation fees, reported Gulf News. The school issued a circular in May advising of a hike in costs but parents say the combined fees have risen by more than 70%. The school claims the increase was with the backing of the Ministry of Education to help fund its relocation.

Maritime museum for Dubai

Dubai Maritime City is to construct and operate the UAE's first specialised maritime museum. The museum will be located in the Academic Quarter of Maritime City and will occupy 40,000 sqft; it will feature a range of artefacts, covering subjects such as marine life, pearl diving and Arab navigation techniques. The Academic Quarter will also comprise an academy offering maritime training.

$24.3m for Dubai Cares

Donations to the new Dubai Cares charity unveiled last week by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, have now reached $24.3m, reported Gulf News. Prominent local businessmen have donated sizeable amounts, while telco operator Etisalat has pledged $6.8m. The charity, which aims to educate 1m children in poor countries around the world, is targeting more than $50m.
