Dubai college offers masters degree in construction law
British University in Dubai has announced the launch of a master's programme in construction law and dispute resolution. The programme is designed for practising lawyers, engineers, architects, surveyors and those in other relevant disciplines.
UAE schools to get extended break for Eid, National Day
Public and private schools in the UAE will remain closed from Dhu Al Hijja 9 to December 3 to mark Eid Al Adha and the National Day, according to a decision issued by Humaid Mohammad Obaid Al Qutami, Minister of Education. Eid Al Adha, which falls on Dhu Al Hijja 10 is expected to fall either on November 27 or 28, depending on sighting the new crescent. The National Day is on December 2. Schools will resume classes on December 6.
Dubai college closes due to low demand
The Postgraduate Institute of Management International Centre in Dubai's Knowledge Village has closed because the operation was 'not feasible' with the number of students who had registered, reported the National. In a letter to students, the centre's director, Prof Gunapala Nanayakkara, said demand for programmes had reached 'a very low ebb' as the number of students enrolled fell short of the 60 that the school had required.
Nuclear energy scholarship programme launched in UAE
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, the Khalifa University of Science Technology and Research and the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation have jointly announced the opening of admissions for the UAE Nuclear Energy Scholarship Programme. The programme provides UAE nationals with a full scholarship to pursue a Bachelor or Masters degree in nuclear, mechanical, or electrical engineering, and once the studies are complete, the selected scholars will work in the UAE's growing nuclear energy industry.
ConocoPhillips funds school library
Park House English School in Doha, Qatar, has received funding from US-based energy firm, ConocoPhillips, for a secondary library, Gulf Times has reported. The library holds 1,500 books and references on science, humanities, the classics, business and administration, religion, art and languages.
Jordan ministry approves 330 scholarships
Jordanian Education Ministry has approved university scholarships for 330 male students to enroll in bachelor's programmes at public universities, Jordan Times has reported. Priority for the 2009-2010 scholarships was given to academically outstanding students, the ministry said.
University of Waterloo offers degrees in UAE
Uiversity of Waterloo in Canada has partnered with Higher Colleges of Technology to offer Bachelor's of Applied Science degrees in Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering at the Dubai Men's College campus. Students study for two years at UW UAE and the final two years in Waterloo Canada. A degree on Bachelor of Mathematics in Information Technology Management and in Financial Analysis and Risk Management will also be offered in September 2010.
Adec grants 197 scholarships
The scholarship committee of the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has said that it has granted scholarships to 197 out of 345 applicants, including 33 university students and 164 high school graduates. The selected students will be supervised and monitored by ADEC's Guidance and Scholarship Department until they complete their university programs.
Citi Foundation grants $100,000 scholarship
The Citi Foundation has renewed its support for the Higher Colleges of Technology through a third year $100,000 grant to the Citi-sponsored Bachelor Scholarships Programme. The grant aims to upgrade qualifications of HCT students to a bachelor degree from the current three-year higher diploma credentials. The added academic qualifications concentrate on areas of business and financial services such as accounting, human resources, marketing, travel and tourism, and e-business management.
Qatar University launches educational fund
Qatar University, Al-Faisal Holding Company and Qatar National Bank have announced the launch of a new joint initiative for students in QU's College of Business and Economics, Gulf Times has reported. Al-Faisal Educational Fund aims to enhance courses in investment and portfolio management by giving students the opportunity of firsthand experience of investment activities at Qatar Exchange and other stock markets in the Gulf region. The Fund is facilitated by Al-Faisal's subsidiary, the Al Rayyan Education Company and will be financed by Al-Faisal's chairman and CEO, Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim al-Thani. It will be managed by the investment department of QNB.
GEMS school layoffs were 'normal adjustments'
Global Education Management Systems (GEMS), the UAE's largest operator of private schools, said its recent layoffs were the result of normal yearly adjustments, the company told the National. Last week it announced layoffs at the GEMS American Academy - Abu Dhabi and the Wellington International School in Dubai, and said it would cease offering secondary classes at Royal Dubai School. 'We are doing what we do every year and adjusting staffing levels,' Richard Forbes, the director of marketing and communications for the company, told the daily.
Mantra signs research deal with Saudi university
US firm Mantra Venture Group has signed a letter of intent with Saudi Arabia's King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals to explore and research new processes that would use the company's Electroreduction of Carbon Dioxide (ERC) reactor, a form of carbon recycling, Saudi Gazette has reported. ERC can convert carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals, and the pair hope that via research at the university, more can be added to that list. Current chemicals produced include formate salts, formic acid, oxalic acid and methanol.
Heriot-Watt University Dubai to build new campus
Heriot-Watt University Dubai has said it will build a new campus at Dubai International Academic City. The number of students at its current Dubai campus has grown by 30% to 1,300, according to the University's vice-chancellor Prof. Steve Chapman. In addition to building larger premises, the Dubai campus will introduce PhD programmes, he added, because the university wants to focus more on research.
ICDL, MSU Dubai tie up for ICT programs
ICDL GCC Foundation and Michigan State University (MSU) Dubai have announced its partnership to set up a new ICDL Certified Training and Assessment Centre at MSU Dubai. The facility will offer specialised IT training programs for educators and students in higher education. The two institutions have also agreed to have also agreed develop a curriculum for a new ICT program, in both Arabic and English.
Gems to shut Dubai secondary school
Gems has confirmed that it is closing the secondary part of Royal Dubai School in Mirdif, Dubai, due to financial reasons. The school had fewer than 100 students and parents have been told that it was uneconomical to run. Pupils have a guaranteed place of one of two alternative Gems secondary schools, and have been given the choice of moving them either in January or at the start of the next academic year. However, some have raised concerns about what this will mean for class sizes. The primary school will continue to operate, the company said.
