  • Rising school fees in Dubai bring challenges

  • A recent report by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry said that the number of Dubai residents aged 10 to 19 in the country was 'unusually low'. The explanation, it said, was that soaring school fees had forced expats to send children home for schooling. The report found that secondary school fees had jumped by 25.2% in 2008, while primary schools rose by 18.7%. The study estimated that fees now range from Dhs3,000 up to Dhs58,000.

  • Emaar to build $32m school in Saudi

  • Emaar Economic City, the Saudi Arabian unit of Dubai's Emaar Properties, has signed a $32m contract to build a school in the kingdom, Bloomberg has reported. The school, located in the King Abdullah Economic City, is scheduled for completion by August, the company said.

  • Schools must meet bus deadline to get licence

  • Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority will not renew school licences unless institutions meet the new school bus safety regulations developed by the Roads and Transport Authority, reported Khaleej Times. All schools have been given a deadline till September this year to make all the necessary changes on their fleet while all school bus drivers must be certified latest by March.

  • E-College open for admissions

  • The e-TQM College, the first e-learning institution in the UAE and the region, is currently accepting applications for its 2009 Spring Academic Programmes. From January 10 onwards, the institution will be hosting 'open days' every Saturday for admission proceedings. For further information, one can check the college website www.etqm.ae.

  • Zayed Uni offers special education Masters

  • UAE-based Zayed University is to begin offering Masters degrees in special education to cater to the shortage of teachers able to teach special needs children in the country. The course is one of eight new ones being rolled out in 2009 and is open to students of all nationalities.

  • Qatar to have 30 new kindergartens

  • The Qatar Supreme Education Council and the Education Institute are implementing a strategic plan for expanding educational opportunities for young children in independent schooling in Qatar. Included in the plan is the construction of 30 new kindergarten buildings which will be ready for occupancy at the beginning of the 2009 school year.

  • First Gulf Bank in Sorbonne finance deal

  • First Gulf Bank has signed an agreement with Mubadala Development Company to provide, along with five other banks, a $323m 20-year loan. The money will be used to finance the new campus of Paris Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi.

  • Iraq tertiary education to grow

  • University education in Iraq received a boost with the opening of an Open University in Ninewa's al-Hamdaniya district north of Baghdad, and the laying of a cornerstone for Fallujah University. The cornerstone was laid on Wednesday in the presence of the Iraqi Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the head of Anbar's provincial council.
