Saudi firm buys stake in UAE's University Bookshop
- The Saudi Specialised Publishing Company, a subsidiary of the Saudi Research and Marketing Group, has bought 51% of the UAE's University Bookshop for SR71.5m ($19m). UB specialises in publishing and translating university and school textbooks. SSCP said the deal will help meet the growing demand for knowledge-based products required by universities and schools in the region.

Dubai to open 21 new schools
- Dubai will open about 21 new public schools next year and will start admitting students at the beginning of the year, reported Khaleej Times. The emirate will also be appointing specialised Arabic language academic supervisors in all public schools in the UAE next year.

Al Waleed gives $15.7m to Cambridge and Edinburgh
- Saudi billionaire Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal has given 8 million pounds ($15.7m) each to the UK universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh to launch Islamic studies research centres, reported Bloomberg. Al Waleed made the pledge at London's Buckingham Palace in the company of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Chancellor of both universities. Al Waleed said Islam and the West need to reach mutual ground for proactive dialogue, respect, acceptance and tolerance.

AMSI to offer Cisco courses
- Academia Management Solutions International (AMSI) announced it will be offering Cisco Networking Academy courses and certifications at the AMSI managed schools in Dubai, beginning September 2008. AMSI manages the Al Mawakeb Schools and ISAS in the UAE, and the International School of Al-Koura in Lebanon.

Qatar Foundation to open music academy
- Qatar Foundation announced it will open a music academy at Education City in late 2009. The school will initially be housed at Qatar’s new Cultural Village, along with the new 101-member Qatar Symphony Orchestra taking up residence this summer.

Emaar opens all-girls school
- Emaar Education has opened its all-girls Raffles International School in Umm Suqeim. The school has started registration for classes commencing in September 2008. The co-ed school offers from kindergarten to Grade 4 and is located opposite Burj Al Arab.

Dubai to set up 200 schools in Myanmar
- The ruler of Dubai has ordered the construction of 200 make-shift schools in Myanmar for children in the areas effected by the tropical Cyclone Nargis. The Dubai Cares Campaign will implement the order and will begin construction of the schools today.

Dubai woman receives Harvard Fellowship
- A Dubai Women’s College’s Applied Communications faculty member, Yomna Kamel, has received the Harvard Second annual Science Writers & Journalists Fellowship. The program, held at Harvard Medical School from 11-16 of May, aims to provide print and broadcast journalists in the Gulf and Middle East region with the opportunity to increase the depth and breadth of their reporting on health care, medical innovation and scientific research.
