Dow Chem to partner Saudi science college

The Dow Chemical Company has announced its intention to establish a multi-year, multi-million dollar joint research framework with Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), which will concentrate on using catalysis as a means to develop new routes for producing chemical derivatives. Dow has also announced its intention to explore developmental efforts at the KAUST Research Park and Innovations Cluster in areas such CO2 capture, enhanced oil recovery, water desalination, solar energy, and wind energy.

Hamdan e-University set up

Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in his capacity as the Ruler of Dubai, has issued a decree for the establishment of the Hamdan bin Mohammed e-University (HBMe-U) as an autonomous body that will enjoy financial and administrative independence. HBME-U, which will be based in Dubai, will offer academic programmes, including Bachelor and Master's degrees, as well as PhDs in Business Management and Total Quality Management. Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has been appointed as the Chancellor of HBMe-U.

Masdar inks Education Ministry MoU

Abu Dhabi's Masdar has signed a memorandum of understanding with both the Ministry of Education and Abu Dhabi Education Council, to develop different educational initiatives encouraging study programmes on sustainability and renewable energy sciences. 'The road to a sustainable future starts with the education of our future generations about vital fields such as sustainability, climate change, energy security and clean energy,' said Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar.

Dubai Bank offers summer internships

Dubai Bank has announced the launch of 'Taehhal' program, which offers a two-month summer internship programme for up to 20 students aged 16 years and above, including high school and university students who are residents of the UAE, training them in a wide range of business and banking skills. The bank says that interns will gain on-the-job experience across various divisions of the bank, and will acquire basic skills in customer service, communications, business writing, IT systems, and self-motivational exercises, within the context of the banking industry.

Business schools to join forces in UAE

The UAE University's College of Business and Economics has signed a memorandum of understanding with the University of Cambridge's Judge Business School to establish a new centre for executive education in Abu Dhabi to build the capabilities and support the professional development needs of the private and public sectors. The two universities will begin delivering open enrolment and customised programmes to participants and industry representatives beginning in 2010, and will provide curriculum development, faculty members and programme administrations support.

Pharmacy students exempted from training programme

The UAE's Ministry of Health has decided to exempt graduates of Sharjah University's College of Pharmacy from one year of their post-graduation training, thus enabling them to start their professional lives a year before pharmaceutical graduates from other colleges, and to apply to the ministry's specialized departments for evaluation, in line with its rules and regulations. Dr Hussam Aldeen Hamdi, Deputy Director of medicine and medical sciences college affairs and Dean of Medical School, said the ministry took the decision after reviewing the pharmaceutical college's five-year curriculum, the last of which is a year of training.

UK donates Dhs1.1m for joint research

The UAE has secured more than Dhs1.1m from the United Kingdom as part of the British Prime Minister's Initiative (PMI2) Connect research co-operation programme, which is designed to boost joint research by higher education institutions in the UK and the Gulf states. 'We are in no doubt that higher education; including research, depends upon international interaction and collaboration,' said Martin Prince, registrar at the British University in Dubai.

Saudi women education underutilized-study

Saudi Arabia's large investments in public education has not resulted in an equal increase in women's production output, promoting growth in the number of girls' schools, but to the detriment of teaching quality, according to a new report by Booz & Company. The report showed that thousands of Saudi women graduate each year from university but are not effectively utilized due to lack of job availability and restrictions on work opportunities. Saudi women's participation in the labour force was 14% in 2007.

Kuwait Uni to ink KD5m building deal

Kuwait University has signed a contract with the international consultancy, SoM, in coordination with Gulf Dar Consultants for engineering to design wards for students' activities and sports in the district of Al-Sheddadiah, at a cost of KD5m, Kuna has reported. The building will be constructed on a 124,105 sqm plot of land.

Abu Dhabi hospitality college to upgrade campus

Abu Dhabi's first hospitality management college, European International College (EIC), is planning to move to a bigger campus to enable it to accommodate more students, the college's chairman has said. Dr Abdullah Abdul Jalil Al Fahim has said that the expansion is meant to attract more students, especially Emiratis, to take up hospitality management. The three-year-old college currently has 70 students.

Dubai forms new group to boost education standards

The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry has announced it will form a group to study the best practices at international schools in order to boost education standards in the emirate. The Dubai Private Schools Group also aims to ensure that national curriculum schools catering to the budget segment of Dubai's population also operate cost-effectively and to high standards. The new group will require a minimum of 30 members, according to the chamber's regulations on the organisation of business groups.

Dubai to develop rental index for education centres

Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority has signed an agreement with the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (Rera) to develop a unified index that will establish appropriate levels of rent for different areas, with a view to achieving stability in the rental market for public, as well as private, educational buildings. At present, rents for adjacent schools can vary significantly, which in the case of private schools has a knock-on effect on the level of tuition fees. The new scheme, which will involve the development of long-term rental contracts, is intended to smooth out such disparities.

UAE schools adopt RFID to thwart diploma forgery

Fifty universities throughout the UAE are placing adhesive RFID labels containing security codes on the diplomas they issue, in order to ensure the validity of the documents, as well as speed up the process of university registration. The ministry has advised universities to standardize the data they collect, such as students' personal and academic information. It also urges schools to provide their students with academic certificates that cannot be forged.

School bus fee hikes too high, RTA says

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has told schools and transport companies that they cannot use the new bus regulations as a justification for increasing their transport fees, reported Gulf News. Most schools in Dubai have announced a transport fee hike from 60 to 100% with effect from September, citing higher costs associated with meeting new school bus regulations set up by the RTA. Eisa Abdul Rahman Al Dossary, CEO of the RTA's Public Transport Agency, said the amount needed to upgrade a school bus to meet the requirements of the new rules ranges from Dhs8,000 to Dhs15,000, and he said it would be reasonable if the fee increase per pupil were in the range of Dhs250 to Dhs500 maximum and for one time only.

SABIC, Schlumberger join KAUST program

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has announced that Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) and Schlumberger have become founding members of the KAUST Industrial Collaboration Program (KICP). KICP membership ensures access to all KAUST research, seminars, events, and networking and provides collaborators with recruiting and outreach support, in addition to employment and funding prospects to students.
