Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), one of the oldest in India, has opened a new campus at the Academy Zone in the UAE emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. Admission to the UAE campus will start by the end of May after publishing the class 12th results. Regular courses of reputed MKU under-graduate, post-graduate, and MBA programmes will be offered at the campus.

Dubai's Department of Economic Development and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority have signed an agreement to work together to close licensing loopholes aimed at raising the standard of education in Dubai. The agreement covers six areas of their activities, including a two-way exchange of data relevant to licensing.

The Abu Dhabi Education Council said it plans to demolish and rebuild 30 state schools that had become old and rundown. The first schools to be targeted will be those with no library, auditorium, canteen, or gym. The council plans to build 15 new schools by 2011 and another 15 the following year.

Dr Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, the Director General of Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has said the council has launched the first phase of its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Project in order to reduce operating costs. The ERP will automate, streamline and standardise centralised back office operations that include General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Asset, and Cash management, Purchasing, Human Resource Management, Payroll and Self Service.

An e-learning web portal, developed by the Western Region Education Zone (WREZ), will soon be accessible to over 65,000 Grade 11 and 12 students in the Western Region, UAE. The new web site (www.wez7.com), provides extra lessons for students and helps them get in touch with teachers outside of school hours, allowing teachers to explain the curriculum both verbally and visually in a question-answer and test format.

University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) has announced it will conduct intensive, five-day Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) course for the June examination at its Knowledge Village campus and Abu Dhabi from May 22 to 30. UOWD is the sole agent for Kaplan Schweser financial education programs in the UAE. The course will cover Ethical and Professional Standards, Investment Tools, Asset Valuation and Portfolio Management.

The British University in Dubai has signed an agreement with British Computer Society, the qualifying body for Chartered IT Professionals with a worldwide membership of over 65,000 members. The joint partnership will provide access to BCS' pool of professional members from leading universities, and offer guidance for future developments in the IT sector by sharing information, providing training, certification and consulting on program updates.

Amazon will today unveil the new version of its Kindle e-book reader, which is specifically designed to target the academic publishing market with features including a larger screen and a more fully-functional web browser, the Wall Street Journal has reported. Amazon has worked out a deal with a number of textbook publishers to make their materials available for the device.
The National bank of Kuwait (NBK) has launched NBK University, which will offer a six month programme of exclusively designed training courses for the Bank's new graduate recruits. The initiative is a joint venture with the Institute of Banking Studies.
Qatar University has renewed an agreement with Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC) to pursue environmental compliance monitoring in its marine area. RLIC has allocated QR3.8m to the programme, which is now in its third phase.
The Gems Dubai-based school at the centre of a recent parental backlash after hiking school fees 90% has complained, after it was told it could not raise prices because the school has not yet been finished.

An unnamed source at the Abu Dhabi Education Council has said the body will announce new regulation in the coming weeks to improve school standards in the emirate. The regulation covers the appointment of a nurse or doctor, limits to 20 the number of students in each class and will say buses must be operated by trained staff, report Khaleej Times. The regulation also includes the review of teachers' salaries, a new testing system for teachers, resolves the issue of private schools operating from villas and shifts evening schools students to daytime public schools if they attain 70% or above in their final examinations.

Duke University has inked an agreement with the DIFC to open the Fuqua School of Business as its Dubai campus at the DIFC Centre of Excellence. Duke University's Fuqua School of Business will offer global programmes, including the Duke MBA - Cross Continent, the Duke MBA - Global Executive MBA, the Advanced Management Program and the Global Leadership Program.

Nursery schools in Dubai will be rated from late next year, following the recent - and in some cases controversial - release of ratings of primary and secondary schools. Schools will be graded A, B or C, based on various criteria as judged by parents. The government hopes the grading will help bring standardization across nurseries.

The Abu Dhabi Education Council said more university places will be offered to expatriates to ensure that the workforce in the capital has the skills needed for economic growth, reported The National. Expatriates studying certain subjects could be given scholarships on condition they worked in that field for a number of years afterwards.
