UAE's teacher recruitment system may change
- The UAE's Ministry of Education may introduce amendments to the system of recruitment of national teachers, a move that may have a drastic impact on the prospects of 2,600 nationals who are in the waiting list, reported Gulf News. Under the new system, the points scored by nominees at the interviews would no longer be the sole criterion for placement. Instead, priority would be given to graduates of education colleges and those who have a diploma in education. The graduates' general estimates, along with their additional qualifications and previous experience would be considered as well.

UAE launches career counselling resource
- The UAE is launching a new educational resource that will make it easier for Emirati students to make career choices. The Career Coach multimedia package, launched by the Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology, aims to provide career guidance and improve job-seeking skills for thousands of students enrolled on campuses around the UAE. the program was developed to provide learning resources that are culturally suitable for the needs of students in the UAE.

Iran to set university gender quotas
- Iran plans to impose a quota that men and women form a minimum of 30% each in university courses, partly in a bid to prevent women dominating the medical profession, reported AFP, citing Etemad newspaper. Women currently outnumber men at universities in Iran, especially in medical courses. Abdolrasool Pour Abbas, head of Iran's Academic Testing Organisation, said there will be a minimum 30% admission for men and women each and the rest will be chosen competitively.

Sharjah students build solar car
- Siemens and the American University of Sharjah have teamed up to support its students in building solar-powered cars. The car is expected to be finished by May 2008 and will be able to reach a speed up to 100km per hour using only the power produced from solar array.

Call for English, Arabic balance in education
- The Arabic language could face extinction in the UAE and the Gulf in the long run if education policies are not revised to strike a balance between English and Arabic as the medium of instruction, according to speakers on the first day of the two-day international Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages conference in the American University of Sharjah, reported Khaleej Times. Fatima Badry, Professor of English and Linguistics and Director of TESOL at AUS, said that if Arabic was relegated to a second class status, the language might become extinct like Sanskrit, Greek and Latin. Citing examples of France, Syria and Canada, the speakers noted that Gulf countries could teach subjects in both English and Arabic or alternate between the two languages every year.

Tanmia ties up with Azadea
- Tanmia has partnered with Azadea Group in an employment program within Azadea for UAE nationals. The firm has opened various job opportunities for UAE nationals in its chain of retail outlets, restaurants and coffee shops of more than 30 brands that include Zara, Virgin Megastore, Mango, and Sunglass Hut.

EFG-Hermes donates $500,000 to school feeding
- The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) welcomed $500,000 contribution from EFG-Hermes Foundation to support the education of thousands of vulnerable children in Egypt by providing them with take-home rations of food. The donation will be used to support children engaged in or at risk of engaging in exploitative child labour, as well as children who are enrolled in community schools with a special emphasis on girls' education. Take-home rations of food will be purchased for approximately 9,250 children in the four governorates of Sohag, Beni Sweif, Assiut, and Red Sea.

High-level education forum to be held in Dubai
- Delegates from Ministries of Education from the Middle East, South Asia and the UK will meet to discuss the future of education in a forum to be held in Dubai on 27 February. The forum, 'Building Capacity, Raising Performance: Trends in Secondary Education', will focus on issues central to education policy making and the international drive for improved school performance. Ministry officials from Qatar, Sudan, Pakistan, UAE, Jordan, Oman, Syria, Egypt, and Kuwait will be in attendance. The forum will be hosted by University of Cambridge International Examinations in partnership with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority and RM Education.
