The UAE's Ministry of Education will assess 72 schools in the Northern Emirates this year in the first phase of its nationwide accreditation programme, reported The National. Principals of the schools will be given an outline of the new standards expected of them at a meeting today in Sharjah.

Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein is to honour the winners of the Princess Haya Award for Special Education today. The awards will be delivered to 23 winners in various categories of the special education sector in recognition of excellence demonstrated by therapists, educators, administrative people, and parents of special needs individuals. 'A large amount of support from many institutions, in both the public and private sectors in Dubai, has been received for the Award,' Mohammed Al Emadi, head of the Award's executive committee, said.

Teachers from around the world are heading Qatar to participate in a recruitment fair for some 10 international schools. The Peninsula reports that over 100 teachers from different continents will be at the two day event in Doha. The paper said the interest was generated by teachers looking for overseas opportunities because of the economic crisis.
Some schools in Dubai have reacted angrily to the ratings they were given by the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB), claiming their awarded grades were too low. The Dubai schools inspectorate has said that 11 of the first 69 schools it inspected are in need of improvement, with six being judged as unsatisfactory, the lowest of the four grades.

A pilot project has been initiated by the UAE Ministry of Education to select ten public schools in the Emirates to streamline children with special needs into mainstream schools. The project is expected to begin this September, but will be confined to kindergarten and primary classes this year. The schools will comprise professional therapists, and specific teaching and learning aids, and will also be fitted with special lifts. Students will be placed either in regular classrooms with support or a resource room with part-time inclusion in general classroom, or in a special education basic classroom.

Shaikha Rashid Al Shamesi, Director of Permission and Accreditation Department in the Ministry of Education, has said that it will start implementing six new academic accreditation standards in 72 schools in the country from April 19. The system will be implemented in cooperation with the Centre for British Teachers. The academic accreditation includes; 'Schools Leading', 'School Community', 'Schools' Trends for Better Education', 'Environment in Schools', 'Students interaction in Schools' and 'Levels of Students' Learning.'

Sabre Travel Network Middle East has signed its first ever agreement with Al Manar University of Tripoli in Northern Lebanon. The agreement will enable Sabre to provide a number of introductory and advanced courses designed to introduce trainees to the Sabre Reservations System, as well as teach them the basics of fares, pricing, ticketing, refund and revalidation, and is part of an educational initiative targeting entry level travel industry professionals around the region.
The ICT Fund of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority will finance a Dhs60m internet network for academic and research institutions that will operate at higher speeds than commercial services. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, saw the signing of the financing agreement by representatives of the fund, Advanced Network for Education and Research (Aner) and Khalifa University for Science, Technology and Research. The Aner will be linked to 28 universities, colleges and public sector schools in the UAE and in later phases it will be extended to other research institutions.

The Private School Commission of the UAE Ministry of Education has approved the outsourcing of school bus services of as many as 26 private schools affiliated to the Global Education Management Systems (Gems) countrywide, Khaleej Times has reported. Gems has now been asked to find and appoint a private firm to undertake the transport commissions.

The Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau's first inspection summary report has noted 8% of schools Dubai failed to meet the evaluation test, while more than 50% have passed the 'acceptable' rating. The report card released on Thursday has reviewed 69 private and public schools in Dubai but the Knowledge and Human Development Authority has said, this is 'not conclusive enough to reach a decision.'

The first ever quality evaluation report by the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau is now open to public on the Knowledge and Human Development Authority's website at www.khda.gov.ae. So far 69 schools have had their results posted in the report, which classifies schools into four performance categories - outstanding, good, acceptable and unsatisfactory. The remaining school results will be posted on May 17.

Parents owe millions of dirhams in overdue fees to Dubai schools, reported Gulf News. School officials say the vast amount of unpaid fees and bounced cheques are forcing them to take harsh measures like suspending students whose parents are late in paying their tuition charges. Essam Elghussein, Finance Manager of Dubai International School, said in the last term alone they had over Dhs1m in outstanding fees and 150 dud cheques. Raminder Vig, Principal of Winchester School, said there are 142 children who have fees overdue for two months, and 186 students who are a month overdue.

The Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority has signed a deal with Thunderbird School of Global Management to set up a campus of the American school in the kingdom. Thunderbird was founded in 1946 and has operations or representatives in the US, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Central and South America, Singapore and China.
The JSS Education Foundation has opened a new school at Al Barsha in Dubai. The JSS International school is a day boarding school with classes from KG1 to grade VIII following the CBSE curriculum.

In light of recent heavy rains in Dubai, Taha Alhamri, Director of Administrative Services at the Dubai School Agency, said that DSA has sent an announcement to all school principals granting them the right to close their schools based on their assessment of the school building safety and the safety of roads leading to the school. Schools are requested to contact the Assets Management Division of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority and to inform parents before taking any decisions about the closing of the school.
