Dubai woman receives Harvard Fellowship
- A Dubai Women’s College’s Applied Communications faculty member, Yomna Kamel, has received the Harvard Second annual Science Writers & Journalists Fellowship. The program, held at Harvard Medical School from 11-16 of May, aims to provide print and broadcast journalists in the Gulf and Middle East region with the opportunity to increase the depth and breadth of their reporting on health care, medical innovation and scientific research.

International schools open in Qatar
- The Qatari Supreme Education Council has launched two new academic institutions. The Michael E DeBakey High School for Health Professions in Qatar and the International School of London in Qatar, will both open their doors to students in September. The announcement marks the beginning of the Council's 'Outstanding School's Initiative', whereby it aims to increase the number of international educational brands in the country.

Qatar to join nuclear research team
- The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) has extended an invitation for collaboration to Qatar University. CERN is the world's largest nuclear and and high energy physics laboratory. The invitation comes following Qatar University's development of a magnetically-guided slow positron beam system. Qatar is currently the only country in the region to possess this tool, according to a report by by The Peninsula.

Iraq to have 20,000 new teachers
- The Iraqi Education Minister Khudheia Khuzaai announced that the country would appoint 20,000new teachers this year. The move, reported by the Al Sabaah newspaper, is part of the larger investment of $5bn into the education sector. 4,000 schools will be built over the next three years.

Masdar, PI on academic tie up
- The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and the Petroleum Institute (PI) recently signed a collaborative agreement to support Abu Dhabi's academic and research efforts in the field of energy. The agreement will primarily focus on faculty exchanges and research collaboration.

UAE school buses put students at risk
- A top official in the UAE said school buses in the country do not meet the international standards of safety, reported Khaleej Times. Mohammad Ahmed Al Shabibi, Head of Transport Office of the Administration Department at Abu Dhabi Education Zone, said not meeting these standards puts the lives of students at risk. The official was commenting on the rash of recent accidents involving school buses, including the death of a four-year-old boy who was left alone in a school bus in Abu Dhabi.

Dubai college opens in cyberspace
- Dubai Women’s College has built an alternative campus for itself in the internet-based virtual world, Second Life. DWC is the first educational institute in the region to join several international universities who have opened virtual branches in Second Life. Founded in 2003 by Linden Lab, Second Life is a three dimensional virtual world that is created by its members and allows for multiple online communications channels that can be used for a variety of learning activities.

DAE University partners with MIT
- Dubai Aerospace Enterprise University, has announced a strategic partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Global Airline Industry Program to introduce global best practices in its aviation curriculum and promote region-specific research on the aviation and aerospace industry. MIT will help in designing an innovative curriculum for DAE University's aviation degree programs by incorporating competitive simulation games and case studies that are used in MIT courses. MIT will also deliver seminars and short courses specifically focused on the aviation and aerospace industry.
