More education reform needed in Mideast
- The Middle East has made progress in making schooling more accessible to more people and reducing the gender gap in educational opportunities, but it has not witnessed the positive changes seen in Asia and Latin America, according to a new report by the World Bank. The report labeled Jordan and Kuwait as 'top performers' based on access, efficiency and quality of education. Djibouti, Yemen, Iraq and Morocco were ranked lowest.

First speech contest for students
- School students are being urged to take part in an international speech contest being held in Bahrain for the first time in April, reported Gulf Daily News. The event is part of the Bahrain Toastmasters Annual Conference (BTAC), scheduled for April 25 and 26, at the Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE), Juffair. It is being organised under the theme of Adhari: Spring of Life, under the patronage of Information Minister Jihad Bukamal. An Inter-School Youth International Speech Contest and an Arabic International Speech Contest will be held for the first time, along with four regular Toastmaster speech contests.There will also be four educational presentations and workshops featuring four of the finest speakers in the Middle East.

Professors from American universities visit PEC
- Representatives of American universities at Education City Doha visited Pakistan Education Centre to share information and guide students about getting admissions, reported The Peninsula. The delegation was warmly received at the Arbab Auditorium. Vice Principal Boys Wing Ammanullah Khan, in his welcome address, highlighted the educational activities of the students at the campus and briefed them about the subjects being taught at PEC in the secondary and higher secondary levels. Representatives of Georgetown University, VCU Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University, Qatar Foundation, Texas A&M University and Northwestern University gave detailed presentations, highlighting the procedures, system, and benefits of higher education at the American universities in the Education City.

UAE MoE has a secret plan
- A spokesperson for the UAE's Ministry of Education (MoE) said that the ministry will soon introduce a secret informer mechanism in its policies, reported Khaleej Times. He added that informers could be anyone from a parent to an MoE official, or anybody else who will pay random visits to the schools to check on the quality of services provided to the students. The new measure was disclosed by the Director-General of the MoE, at the meeting with principals of the future schools from all emirates. Moreover, the director assured that the ministry would also undergo other reforms to enhance performance of schools.

Rajagiri opens in Dubai
- Rajagiri and Sudhir Gopi Holdings have opened the first of its schools in Dubai named Rajagiri International School, reported Khaleej Times. The school is located in Warqaa area of Dubai to be managed by Rajagiri Province of CMI congregation and facilitated by the UAE based Sudhir Gopi Holdings Inc.

Qatar to get a German school
- A new German school is being planned in Qatar, reported Gulf Times. The German embassy, in co-operation with the German Business Council Qatar, intends to establish Deutsche Schule Doha. Plans suggest the opening of a pre-school and possibly the first classes of primary school for the winter semester 2008.

Microsoft extends education partnerships
- During his visit to the Government Leaders Forum - Arabia in Abu Dhabi, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates announced a number of partnerships aimed at driving IT development in Arabian countries. These include strategic partnerships between the Mohammed Bin Rashid Foundation and Microsoft to promote IT research via a 'knowledge platform', and with the Dubai Cares organization to establish a further education programme for teachers and parents. Microsoft will also provide free email, messaging and online storage facilities to 650,000 high-school students in Oman in an arrangement similar to one the company recently set up with the Jordanian Universities Network.

SQU issues first doctorate
- Sutan Qaboos University has marked a milestone in its transition from a teaching to a research university by awarding its first Ph.D., reported Khaleej Times. The proud recipient is Ali Salim Al Rajhi after the examining committee last week discussed and approved his geology thesis titled '3D Modelling of the Sur Tertiary Basin', in Oman's eastern Sharqiya region.
