Harvard Medical School Dubai Centre Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research has announced that it has signed an agreement with Al Naboodah Contracting Company to build a new facility. The new 350,000 square feet facility will be HMSDC's permanent quarters and will include a 340 seat auditorium, teaching space, a simulation centre and educational resources.

Saudi Arabia needs 10 more science and technology universities to meet growing business demand, according to the kingdom's Minister of Higher Education. Khaled Al-Anqari said that 70,000 students were sent by the government to universities in countries such as the US, UK, Canada, New Zealand, Malaysia and India rather than being educated in Saudi Arabia. He added that the ministry has been considering the requirements of the labour market while approving university and college programmes for the past decade.
Ajman University of Science and Technology (AUST) is to teach all courses electronically by 2011. Students and faculty members at AUST will have a completely virtual cyber environment to interact more efficiently when the university begins teaching all the courses electronically. The university will use Moodle, an electronic course management system.

The British Council-Qatar is currently offering a course called 'Train the Trainer' to give Qatari teachers the skills, knowledge and confidence to train other English language teachers in the country. The aim of the course is to help raise the standard of the teaching of English in the region and to pass on the British Council's expertise in this area.
The Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) have signed an agreement that will train HCT students in executing a body of joint media projects. The activities of HCT will exclusively be covered on DMI's various channels, mostly by Sama Dubai, to highlight updates on evolving education landscape in the UAE.

English language studies in the kindergarten and infant level will be started in Kuwait by next educational year according to Kuwait's Minister of Education and Higher Education Nouriya Al-Subeeh. He said the ministry's plans to develop educational curricula for the English language are part of its efforts to enable students in the primary level to converse in English as a second language.
A new history book has been launched by the UAE National Center for Documentation and Research (NCDR) during a press conference. The book which is titled "New Perspectives in Recording UAE History" includes 25 papers by historians and scientists documenting millions of years of the country's history.

A group of 10 university and high schools students from Qatar are to take part in the first Doha Debates to be held in the USA. The event will be held at Georgetown University in Washington DC. The students will spend a week in the US capital learning more about the country's politics, education and culture.
Iraq and Kuwait have agreed to enhance their educational relations through launching of training courses and development programs. The co-operation between the two nations was the focus of talks held between Iraq's education minister and Kuwait ambassador to Iraq.
All schools that follow UAE Ministry curriculum will be required to adopt a unified academic calendar, beginning next academic year, reported Gulf News. Accordingly, 23 August 2009 will be the returning date for teaching and administrative staff while schools and university students will resume their studies on 30 August 2009. The end of year summer breaks will begin on 13 June 2010. The decision applies to all public, private schools and universities following the ministry's curriculum.

Dubai will host 'Education Without Borders Conference 2009' from 30th March to April 1st. More than 1.000 students from around the world from 300 universities will take part in the conference and will have the chance to discuss educational issues in light of the world financial crisis.

A database that will enhance the standards of education at federal universities and better allocate students into vocations has been created by the planning department of the Ministry of Education. For education providers, the database will help them understand how to gain international standards of education in the UAE by comparing current standards and students will be provided with an understanding of job opportunities and scholarships.

British Members of Parliament Colin Breed and Robert Goodwill will visit the UAE this month to meet teachers and students at UAE partner schools participating in the 'Connecting Classroom' programme. The programme was launched in the UAE by the British Council in 2006 and there are around 20 UAE partner schools.The MPs will also meet senior representatives of the education authorities, policy makers and institutions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The UAE Education Ministry has urged the country's Schools' Sports Federation to expedite the preparation of a new strategic plan to ensure students participation in local and international sporting events. The federation's mandate will also include upgrading sports halls in public schools and encouraging government school students to take part in sports.

Emirates Foundation recently hosted the 8th meeting of the Arab Foundations Forum, which included philanthropic organizations across the Arab countries. The forum discussed projects related to children's well being, education, youth development, and employment. AFF has under its umbrella 25 institutions and aims at expanding into more organisations.
