UAE schools urged to promote sports

The UAE Education Ministry has urged the country's Schools' Sports Federation to expedite the preparation of a new strategic plan to ensure students participation in local and international sporting events. The federation's mandate will also include upgrading sports halls in public schools and encouraging government school students to take part in sports.

Emirates Foundation hosts AFF

Emirates Foundation recently hosted the 8th meeting of the Arab Foundations Forum, which included philanthropic organizations across the Arab countries. The forum discussed projects related to children's well being, education, youth development, and employment. AFF has under its umbrella 25 institutions and aims at expanding into more organisations.

Bloom in JV with Brighton College

Abu Dhabi based developer Bloom has announced a joint venture partnership with Brighton College, which will establish Brighton's new campus abroad. Bloom Education will be developing the institution in Abu Dhabi. No details have been mentioned regarding the commencement of the project.

Dubai school fee hikes linked to quality

Increases in fees at private schools in Dubai will be linked to their performance under new Knowledge and Human Development Authority regulations. The regulations will affect 85% of school goers in the emirate. Whereas increases had been capped at 8%, 'outstanding' schools will be allowed to up fees by 15%, while schools with poor performance will only be allowed 7% hikes.

UAE families spend Dhs2,711 monthly

A recent survey conducted by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority has revealed that the average monthly spend of a UAE family on education is Dhs2,711. The sample examined in the study has shown that 50% of the families spend 6% to 15% of their monthly income on education. Of those polled, only 25% expressed satisfaction at the level of education received.

Dubai school to move to new site

Dubai Modern High School said yesterday it will be shifting to new premises with a fee increase in the coming academic year beginning April. After an ongoing dialogue between the parents and authorities, the school has informed parents about the shift. A spokeswoman said Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority had informed the school that it would be treated on par with other schools if it remained at its current site and the current fee structure would have remained.

Non-accredited schools in Dubai face closure

Private schools in the UAE that do not have academic accreditation will be penalised with fines of up to Dhs50,000 and told to shut down under new rules issed by the Ministry of Education. The rules require private schools in the country to obtain accreditation or prove it has requested accreditation, before the schools trade license expires.

Dubai school bought by Bahrain bank

Al Maaref School in Dubai has been bought by Bahrain-based Addax Bank, through its associate company, First Education Holding. Al Maaref is its third acquisition in the past year, having previously bought the Baby Academy in Egypt and Al Zahour School in Sharjah and brings its total education investment to $40m. The company did not outline its plans for Al Maaref School.

UK's 'Connecting Classroom' project visits Bahrain

Labour MPs Dr Roberta Blackman-Woods and Claire Curtis-Thomas and Conservative Party MP Nigel Evans are visiting Bahrain on a two-day visit as part of the British Council's Connecting Classrooms Project. The project aims to build understanding and trust between people in different societies through sustainable partnerships between schools in the UK and around the world. Since 2006 nine ministry schools have been working in partnership with schools in the UK.

Six private Dubai schools to refund fees

Six private schools in Dubai have been ordered to refund tuition fees, collected in advance, after they continued to violate directives issued by education authorities. The six schools were found flouting the Ministry of Education by-laws that prohibit them from taking tuition fees before the beginning of the month or semester. Education authorities have now warned that failure to comply could also result in the scrutiny of their 'eligibility to fee increases'.

Kalima spreads culture through encyclopaedias

Kalima, the giant translation project of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, is to launch of a series of literature encyclopaedias to introduce Arab readers to the literature of certain cultures. The encyclopaedias include the names of writers and books, cultural movements and literature vocabulary.

RAK plans Dhs100m media college

The Ras Al Khaimah Media City is in the final stages of planning a Dhs100m media studies college as part of its new two million sqft campus, its chief executive has said. The project is being executed in collaboration with an overseas partner who will be revealed once the final agreement is signed.

Kalima in team up with German university

Abu Dhabi-based Kalima has announced the launch of a new project in cooperation with Germany's Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, which will be based by the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. The initiative will focus on German literature and culture, after a series of successful international translation projects.

GCC education urged to focus on tourism

Abdllatif Y Al-Hamad, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development has told a recent panel discussion that Arab education must focus on tourism and services as the sector collectively represents 35% of the region's workforce. He was speaking at the recent at the Wharton Global Alumni Forum in Dubai, and added that over 70% of university students are in 'liberal arts'.

No plans yet to change school calendar in UAE

The UAE has not made an official decision about whether it will make any changes to its 2009-10 academic year to accommodate Ramadan, the Ministry of Education and the Abu Dhabi Education Council have said. Dr Mariam Al Ali, Director of the Supervising and Monitoring of Private Schools Department at the Education Ministry, said nothing has been officially declared about postponing the academic year until after Ramadan. Some private schools have announced that they will resume their academic year between August 30 and September 2, reported Gulf News.
