New vice-chancellor for Qaboos University
Dr Ali bin Saud bin Ali Al Bimani has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the Sultan Qaboos University in place of Dr Saud bin Nasser bin Ali Al Riyami through a decree issued by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, reported Khaleej Times. Dr Bimani was until now the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Community Service. Dr Riyami was appointed an academic advisor at the Higher Education Council with his existing grade.

Handicapped students accepted in Kuwait's private schools
The Ministry of Education's assistant undersecretary for private education Fahad Al-Ghais issued a proposal that expatriate students with special needs be accepted by private schools, reported Kuwait Times. Al-Ghais pointed out that handicapped expatriate students should be accepted to private schools, but only on the condition that the schools have vacant classes for such students.

Bahrain schools benefit from tree planting initiative
As part of The Riffa Views Tree Planting Initiative ten trees were planted at four Bahrain schools. Richard Browning, CEO of Riffa Views and Hugh O'Shea, Sales & Marketing Director, were present at each school as part of a road show that involves visiting 60 schools for the planting of more than 80 trees.

Official defends education quality in Bahrain
Bahrain's head of higher education has rejected claims that the status of private universities in the country was below international standards, attributing the non-accreditation of some of their degrees in Gulf countries to 'commercial competition', reported Gulf News. Dr Alawi Al Hashemi said Bahrain's recent status as a private education hub has generated a 'high level of competition with universities in other countries'. Many new private universities sprouted up in Bahrain in the last four years, but some critics claimed that some of them were 'purely commercially motivated and had no respect for international academic standards.'

French to be taught in Yemen
Yemen's Deputy Prime Minister announced that Yemen and France have recently held meetings for the teaching of the French language to cover the untargeted provinces and further qualify French teachers, SPA reported. Yemen will introduce training courses for French teachers in the schools that teach French language as well as get acquainted with their education after an agreement was made between Yemen's Deputy Minister of Education and the Cooperation French embassy.

Kuwait develops its education system
The national education development conference will commence its activities on Feb 17 under the auspices of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, reported Kuwait Times. Head of the conference's supervising committee Dr Anas Al-Rushaid said that the three-day conference is to discuss the development of education in the country, as well as highlighting challenges, plans, and technological means to raise the standard of education.

GESS goes annual
Fairs & Exhibitions said its inaugural Gulf Educational Supplies Show (GESS) and accompanying Gulf Education Forum will become annual B2B events in Dubai, after the successful launch. GESS reported some 250 exhibitors from 15 countries, opening some new deals for education equipment suppliers to the region.
