  • The UAE's Ministry of Education has approved new bylaws governing the operation and oversight of private schools in the country. Under one of the new by-laws all private schools in the UAE must be accredited based on standards adopted by the Ministry of Education, reported Gulf News.

  • DSS offers apprenticeship program

  • Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) is offering an internship for business administration and marketing students from colleges in the Middle East and the UK. The apprenticeship provides students with opportunities for training and exposure in marketing and events management through an internship. First launched in 2006, the programme now targets more than 30 higher education institutions in nine markets in the Middle East and North Africa.

  • Wage hike for Abu Dhabi teachers

  • Education workers in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region of the emirate are to receive a pay rise of Dh6,000 ($1,634) to help them cope with increased housing prices. The increase is applicable across all 13,000 Emirati and expatriate teachers and administrators, and comes into force from this month.

  • Inflation forces teachers to resign

  • Eighty expatriate teachers have resigned in Bahrain, citing the high cost of living as the principal reason for leaving the country, according to a Gulf News report. Soaring rents have meant that the teaching staff no longer find it financially viable to remain in the Gulf country. Academic workers were earlier disappointed by a decision that a government-sponsored 15% public sector wage increase would not encompass expatriate staff.

  • UAE's expatriate schools praised

  • Dr Hanif Hassan, the UAE's Minister of Education, commended the excellent role played by expatriate schools in the country's education, emphasising the multi-cultural environment which reflects the UAE's belief in the role of every UAE national and expatriate towards paving the country's future, reported state-owned news service WAM. Hanif also said that these schools enhance social ties between different components of the social structure.

  • German school in Doha eagerly awaited

  • The German community in Qatar is eagerly awaiting the opening of the first German School in Doha, reported the Peninsula. Doha has a population of about 1,000 Germans which continues to grow as more German companies set up offices there. All German schools outside Germany are controlled and supervised by authorities in Germany, and German School Doha will be no exception.

  • Omani college granted diploma designate status

  • The Sultan Qaboos University's College of Commerce and Economics has been granted the 'Eduniversal' diploma designate status as part of Eduniversal's official selection of the 1,000 best worldwide business schools in 2008, reported Khaleej Times. Eduniversal is an international organisation based in France that allows students to choose the top institution by helping them to identify the best local or global institution. Its goal is to promote students' mobility all over the world and give a better visibility of the best business schools from more than 151 countries.

  • Youth Knowledge Consortium launched in Doha

  • Major regional and international organizations are joining forces to accelerate the Mena region's ability to better understand and respond to the economic challenges facing young people. The Youth Knowledge Consortium, which was announced at a summit in Doha entitled 'Young People and Employment in the Arab World', will serve as a hub of scholarship, research and thought leadership to support youth policy and initiatives, according to a statement.
