  • Repton Dubai to open in September

  • Repton School in Dubai announced it will accept its first intake of students into its Senior School and boarding programme in September 2008. The school is the first international partner school of Repton School, Derbyshire, one the UK's oldest and most prestigious independent boarding schools, founded in 1557.

  • KSA e-learning hits $125m

  • A study by Madar Research has shown that the Saudi Arabian e-learning sector is on target to reach $125m this year, the Saudi Gazette has reported. The industry is predicted to grow by 33% annually over the next five years, fuelled by government programmes to integrate ICT initiatives into classrooms.

  • British Council signs MOU with UAE college

  • The British Council has signed an agreement with the UAE Higher Colleges of Technology under which the two organisations will working closely to develop educational and cultural links between the two countries. Key areas of focus will be facilitating the promotion and development of the English language and fostering leadership skills in UAE nationals.

  • Nine Dubai schools to end bus service

  • Nine schools under the Gems group in Dubai will no longer run their own school buses and instead outsource the service from June 1. The announcement follows the recent decision by education authorities in the emirate to turn down requests to increase tuition fee above the set fee cap of 16%.

  • Dubai to open Filipino school

  • A new school for Filipino children is opening in Dubai on April 26. The Philippine School Dubai is the second Filipino school to be established in the emirate. Overall, there are eight schools offering Filipino curriculum in the UAE of which three are in Abu Dhabi and three are in Sharjah.

  • More Qatar schools set to open

  • US-based Michael E DeBakey High School for Health Professions, and The International School of London (ISL pre-K-12) are opening branches in Qatar and set to begin operations in September this year, reported The Peninsula. The schools are part of the Supreme Education Council's 'Outstanding Schools Initiative' expected to open two-three private international schools in Qatar every year over the coming few years.

  • Bahrainis train on management

  • The Labour Fund and the Bahrain Institute of Banking & Finance (BIBF) has teamed up to train 50 Bahraini business managers and owners of SMEs for a Leadership Skills Programme at the BIBF. The 12-month long part-time 'International Diploma in Management Programme' is offered in association with the Chartered Management Institute, UK. The project is being implemented for three years to train 200 Bahraini business owners and managers.

  • Dubai Cares names recipients

  • UAE-based charity Dubai Cares, which raised Dh3.4bn ($926.4m) last year in an eight-week fundraising drive, has announced the launch of a project to fund education in 12 of the world's poorest countries. The twelve countries chosen to receive donations in phase one are Bangladesh, Bosnia, Chad, Comoros Islands, Djibouti, Maldives, Mauritania, Niger, Pakistan, occupied Palestinian territories, Sudan and Yemen, with money also going to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and Jordan. The funds will be spent to build new schools, refurbish existing facilities and provide medical services and drinking water as part of the charity's goal of educating one million children.
