New training academy for jewellery industry
Dubai is opening a new academy aimed at training men and women who want to establish their own business or work in the local jewellery industry. The Damas Jewellery Academy will be housed at The National Institute for Vocational Education in Academic City. It is the first joint venture in the region between Damas Jewellery and NIVE, an initiative of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority.

Dubai pupils to assess real-life skills
About 1,800 fifteen-year-old pupils in 64 schools in Dubai will be assessed on whether their schools have given them the skills they need for adult life as part of the Programme for International Student Assessment, reported Gulf News. Fatima Al Merri, CEO of the Dubai Schools Agency, said, the assessment is forward looking, focusing on young people's ability to use their knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges.

GEMS signs deal for first KAEC school
The first school in King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) is to be established by Global Educational Management Systems (GEMS), an international education provider, under an agreement that it has signed with Emaar, The Economic City, the company developing KAEC, and the Saudi Investment Authority (SAGIA), the prime facilitator of KAEC, reported Arab News. The school, to be operational in 2009, will be spread over 50,000 square meters and initially offer kindergarten to high school classes for over 2,000 students.

Qatar Academy to open in Al Khor
The Qatar Foundation is opening a second Qatar Academy at Al Khor in September this year, reported The Peninsula. It will offer early-years, primary and secondary education to an international student body. The new school will be a private, and non-profit school, but will be bilingual, oferring both English and Arabic.

Mideast donations to UK push 'extremist' education
A controversial new report claims that Saudi Arabian and Muslim organisations have donated Â£233.5m since 1995 to British universities to spread 'extremist ideas'. The report, cited in UK paper the Telegraph, claims eight universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, have accepted donations. While the donors say the money has been used to promote understanding between the West and Islamic countries, the report from the Centre for Intelligence and Securities Study at Brunel University says it has been used to push 'one sided views' that amount to 'anti-Western propaganda'. Universities and the government denied the charges.

Dubai Medical College launches fund
Dubai Medical College for Girls (DMCG), the first medical college in the UAE, has launched the Medical Research Fund which aims to create a framework to overcome obstacles in performing community research by channeling resources to quality researchers who deserve such support. Prof. Fatehia Aly Bayoumy, General Secretary of the MRF said the MRF will be governed by key specialised committees that will oversee the research programs from the technical, financial and ethical perspectives. These committees will propose funding programs and develop the criteria and guidelines for funding.

Dubai foundation & Intel to train 2m teachers
The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation has signed an agreement with Intel to provide free online professional training for 2 million teachers in the Arab World, by 2011. The partnership will extend the Intel Teach programme to the Arab World, and target 150,000 teachers in 2008. It will also develop an Arabic online professional development and training community to enable even remote areas to access high quality training.

Education reform needed in GCC
Research by Recent Ideation Center, Booz Allen Hamilton's Middle East Think Tank, has found that education reform in the GCC is a necessary step for ensuring the future economic growth and development of the region. Low scores in international tests such as the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, show that GCC countries need to focus their curriculum more on mathematics and sciences and ensure that teaching quality is up to international best standards, the report said. Although the impact of an aggressive education policy may not become apparent until years after implementation, noticeable results can occur in a decade, while full economic impact may require between three to four decades, the study concluded.
