  • A record 14 undergraduate students from across the Middle East have been offered places at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) this year, up from 10 in 2007. The number represents a 10% share of foreign students admitted.

  • Fee hikes 16% in 40 Dubai schools

  • Out of 137 Dubai private schools, more than 40 of them have been allowed to increase fees by up to 16% for the next academic year, reported Gulf News. According to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, it is keeping the 16% cap on fee hike. It is expected 55,000 pupils will be affected by the increase.

  • No rent, tuition fee hike in Dubai

  • The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) said community-centered schools, which have rented land from Dubai Government will have their rent frozen for the next academic year in exchange of not raising their tuitions fees, cited Gulf News. KHDA has collaborated with the Dubai Real Estate Corporation to stabilise the land rents for these schools.

  • Qatar to host knowledge conference

  • Qatar Foundation, with the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology and UNESCO is hosting a conference and exhibition on Knowledge Parks in Qatar next week. The event will look into specialized knowledge parks particularly on how information communication technology will generate creative IT businesses for younger entrepreneurs.

  • UNLV seeks to open UAE campus

  • The University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) may be the latest US school to build a campus in the Middle East. The university is conducting a feasibility study on a plan to open a hospitality program in the UAE emirate of Ras al Khaimah, reported the Las Vegas Sun. The UAE branch, which could open as soon as spring 2010, would offer a bachelor's degree in hotel administration and a master's degree in hospitality administration. The curriculum would be identical to what is offered at the Las Vegas campus.
