Shaikh Zayed University opens in Afghanistan
- A new school for higher learning, which was built on a grant from was built on a grant by the UAE's late president Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, was inaugurated in Afghanistan on Saturday, according to state-owned Emirates News Agency (Wam). Shaikh Zayed University, which will have a capacity of 3,000 students, is located in Khost province, 200km from the capital Kabul. The university was built at the cost of $4.8m.

UAE University gets Sun super grid
- Sun Microsystems has deployed its super grid computers at the UAE University. The system is the region's biggest grid computing system installed to address the university's needs on computing applications such as intelligent computing to nanotechnology.

UAE delegation attends US forum
- A group of supervisors and directors from the UAE's Ministry of Education are currently participating in the 63rd Annual Conference of Supervisors and Curriculum Directors on the theme 'Reinventing Schools: Courageous Leadership for Positive Change' being held in New Orleans, USA, until March 22. Representatives of 86 countries are participating. The supervisors in the delegation have been selected based on their responsibilities and specialisation. They will submit reports and make presentations for their colleagues and teachers about the experiences gained as well as the trip's outcomes.

Joint MBA scholarship programme launched
- Manchester Business School Worldwide has launched an MBA scholarship programme in conjunction with TECOM (Dubai Technology Electronic Commerce and Media Free Zone). The joint programme will initially provide one MBA scholarship for an MBS Worldwide blended learning course, starting in July 2008. All staff members of TECOM registered partner organisations are eligible to apply and the successful student will be able to choose their preferred MBA programme - Finance, Engineering Management or Construction Management - each of which offers a combination of common core business modules supplemented by specialist electives.

UD offers oil & gas course
- The Thunderbird School of Global Management has partnered with the Center for Management & Professional Development, the community outreach arm of the University of Dubai to offer its Advanced Management Program for Oil & Gas in the Middle East. The program is being offered for the first time in the region and will be held in Dubai from 10 to 15 May 2008.

UK company wins school auction
- British private equity group Sovereign Capital is believed to have won the auction to buy World Class Learning Schools for around $75m. Sovereign wants to increase its presence in the Middle East, where it already runs a school in Qatar.

Education pillar of Saudi society says King
- In his address to the Shoura Council yesterday, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia said that education was the 'pillar' of any scientific achievement and genuine development of a nation. Opening the fourth annual session of the current Shoura Council, the king told the 150 members of the council, as well as princes, ministers, government officials that he hoped the project to develop general education would result in better skilled Saudi students in science and technology, reported Arab News. With new universities under construction, higher education was now available in all regions of the country, he said.

Dyslexia conference in Kuwait
- Kuwait Dyslexia Association will hold the first Dyslexia Screening and Assessment Conference in the Middle East in Kuwait at Salwa Sabah, Al Ahmed Ballroom on March 17-18. Sponsored by Kipco, the conference will discuss how to assess and screen dyslexia through multiple lectures and practical training on the latest diagnosing technology and techniques.
