Etisalat, BT and Khalifa U to launch joint centre
Etisalat, BT and Khalifa University in the emirate of Sharjah have announced plans to establish a joint research and innovation centre at the university focusing on innovation within the Information and Communication Technology sector. University of Michigan and UAE University ink agreement
The University of Michigan Ann-Arbor and the UAE University have signed an agreement that will pave the way for the two institutions to collaborate on a number of areas in service of higher education. The agreement includes possibilities to collaborate in scientific research, academic programs and faculty and student exchange. The University of Michigan is one of the top ranked schools in the US, while UAE University was recently ranked number one in research in the Gulf and number two overall in the Arab world by the OIC (Organization of Islamic Conference).

SQU college launches PhD programme
Oman's Sultan Qaboos University is launching its first PhD programmes, which will be offered by its College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences, reported Khaleej Times. The move will build on the master's programmes that have been running for nine years and will complete the progression of courses offered by the college. Initially the PhD programmes will be offered by four departments - Soils, Water and Agricultural Engineering, Food Science and Nutrition, Crop Sciences and Marine Science and Fisheries. Other departments will follow later.

Qatar needs more teachers
According to Qatar University, the country will require an estimated 5,000 qualified teachers at various levels in the next five years, cited The Peninsula. The Supreme Education Council said Qatar was facing a challenge in getting the required number of qualified teachers.

Vocational training discussed in UAE/UK meeting
Twenty five UK education, employment and technology experts have flown to Abu Dhabi for week long discussions on vocational training. The group is meeting HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The meetings are part of the UAE's drive to provide improve education in the country, and will exchange ideas and experiences, said the government news agency Wam.

UAE teachers go to UK school
Two teachers from the UAE have spent a week in a school in a small English town, looking at how the education system between the two countries differs. Part of a British Council scheme, it is designed to forge relations between the UK and the Middle East, and give students a better understanding of the region. The Abu Dhabi based teachers also learnt about the English National Curriculum and saw firsthand how classes are taught. The scheme is also open to schools in Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Cambridge center in Lebanon
The Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAGorg) has signed an agreement on with The University of Cambridge International Examinations to establish Cambridge International Center in Beirut to train teachers and trainers. The Center will offer Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers and Trainers, Cambridge International Certificate for Teachers and Trainers, and Cambridge International Diploma in Teaching with ICT.

Professor sacked over Danish cartoons
An American university professor has been fired for publishing Danish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed on his website, reported Gulf News. The name or location of the university was not named, but the dateline of the article was Manama in Bahrain. 'Many incensed students, mainly from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, protested vehemently and argued with the professor, and eventually reported him to the president of the university for insulting Islam,' students told the newspaper. The caricatures were published on a personal website used by students to download course notes.
