Bahraini schools warned on fee hikes

Bahrain's education ministry has warned the kingdom's private schools not to increase students' fees or implement new ones without official approval, Gulf Daily News has reported. Schools found violating the rules will be held accountable legally, and may have their licences revoked, the ministry said. 'The aim is to secure affordable fees for parents and strike a better balance between schools' means and educational standards,' a ministry statement said.

More Emiratis choosing private schools

A rising number of UAE national students are transferring to private schools in Dubai, according to a report by Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority. Nearly 50% of UAE national students are enrolled at private schools in the emirate, the study said, lured by the higher quality of private schools and the slower pace of reform in the public school system, Khaleej Times has reported.

Elementary schools reopen in Saudi

Kindergartens and elementary schools across Saudi Arabia began the new academic year on Saturday amidst tight preventive measures against swine flu, Arab News has reported. UAE Knowledge Authority not to handle school budgets

The UAE's ministry of education has ruled out granting increased financial powers to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Gulf News has reported. 'The schools funds allocated in the federal budget are directly going to schools and it will continue to do so,' said Dr. Humaid Mohammad Obaid Al Qutami, Minister of Education.

Arabtec sponsors 'Chair in Civil Engineering' at HCT

KFUPM in polymer research MoU

King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem) and the Ministry of Petroleum & Minerals have signed an MoU to establish a research centre for the development of polymers technologies and applications. Under the agreement, Sipchem will build the centre at the Dhahran Techno-Valley at KFUPM at a cost of SR80m. Sipchem will also be responsible for the centre's management and operation. The centre is expected to be operational in 2012.

Dubai authority seeks control of school funding

Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority needs control over federal funds if it is to reform public schools, it needs control over federal funds, Dr Abdullah Al Karam, Chairman, Board of Directors and Director General of KHDA said yesterday. 'We have done only a fraction of what we can actually do,' he told Gulf News. 'The minute we are made responsible financially, and funds for public schools are transferred to the KHDA, you will see big changes.'

Dubai South Asian schools to be inspected

Twenty-six Indian and Pakistani schools in Dubai that are scheduled to be inspected next month say they will support the assessments, as long as their resources are taken into account, The National has reported. 'I think this inspection has made us look within and that's a good thing,' said Rashmi Nandkeolyar, the principal of the Delhi Private School. 'If all educational standards rise, it's good for us as a school and for our children.'

Insead launches Global Executive MBA

Insead is launching its Executive MBA programme from its Abu Dhabi campus starting in the 2010/2011 academic year, the company has said. A section of its Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) programme will be launched in Abu Dhabi where participants based in the Middle East will be able to take core courses in the Abu Dhabi campus in the first half of the programme, and then integrate into a global cohort for several joint modules with GEMBA participants based in Europe and Asia.
