CIBT Education Group reports that its subsidiary, CIBT School of Business & Technology, has signed an agreement to establish a CIBT Vocational and Education Center at the Lianyungang Teachers College (LTC) in Lianyungang City, China. Lianyungang is a major coastal city and is a rising center for industry, foreign trade and tourism in eastern China. With the new Eurasia Continental land-bridge and railway networks, Lianyungang is connected to 40 countries and regions in Europe, South Asia and the Middle East.

The Abu Dhabi Education Council and the Abu Dhabi Education Zone have joined forces to provide better services to students and schools in the emirate, reported Khaleej Times. ADEC had recently signed an MoU with the Ministry of Education to transfer the supervision of ADEZ from the ministry to the ADEC. Director-General of ADEC Mubarak Al Shamsi said ADEZ would serve as a focal point to provide all the required services and help to schools, students, teachers and parents.

Leading education officials from throughout the Middle East are in Dubai this week to attend a leading-edge forum which is expected to assist in setting a new education agenda for the region. Ministry and NGO officials from Bahrain, Yemen, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia will be at the Gulf Education Forum, which runs at the Madinat Arena from January 21-23. The forum will examine key issues impacting the education industry in the region.

An initiative to integrate the first four UAE pupils with Down's syndrome into a public kindergarten has been cancelled due to lack of funds, reported Gulf News. Although the initiative was initially successful, at the beginning of the second term the project suffered repeated failure, resulting in its cancellation. Three of the special-needs pupils have been left without any form of schooling.

Maha Al-Ghunaim, President of YAL- Kuwait chapter announced the launch of a training program with an initiative of bringing together Kuwaiti and foreign students in the private sector, reported Kuwait Times. The 'Internship and Exchange Program' will allow students to exchange their knowledge and capabilities within the Kuwaiti's various organizations and universities, given that Kuwait's private sector is one of the best and strongest sectors in the region in terms of size and experience.
A group of Ministry of Education employees are demanding for the halt of using fingerprint sign-in machines, reported Kuwait Times. The MOE employees stated that the fingerprint machines caused cancer and many other diseases. The employees also claimed that the machines had been cancelled in many other ministries and they urged all employees to go on strike till the old card-punching system was redeemed. Commenting on the call for a strike, some parliamentary sources stressed that those in favor of removing the machines were a group of unproductive employees who never used to go to work and who had other people punch their cards in and out.
The Ministry of Education's Assistant Undersecretary for public education affairs Mohammed Al-Kandari said 1,100 ministry employees had passed their oral and written tests and had qualified to be promoted to higher positions, reported Kuwait Times. Al-Kandari said the promoted employees included male and female teachers who had been promoted to senior teacher, supervisory and managerial positions.
The Ministry of Education's General Manager of the private education department Mohammed Al-Dahes was recently appointed as the director of the needy students charity fund, reported Kuwait Times. Al-Dahes will be taking the place of the recently retired director Bandar Al-Hawwas.
The Rector of Kuwait University Abdullah Al-Fahaidan announced that exams scheduled on January 19 will be postponed until January 22, reported Kuwait Times. Al-Fahaidan said the exams were postponed because most Muslims will fast on January 19, which is known as the day of Ashoura. Meanwhile, MP Husain Mezyad asked the Ministry of Education to delay school exams by two hours every day because of the cold weather.
The UAE's Ministry of Education has announced that all government and private schools in Dubai, Sharjah, and the northern emirates will remain closed on Wednesday and Thursday because of heavy rains, reported Khaleej Times. However, public and private schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the western region will remain open.

E-Learning in the UAE is expected to achieve a compounded average growth rate of 26% to reach $72.6m by the end of 2010, according to Madar Research Group. A four day forum, 'e-Learning Excellence in the Middle East 2008', is currently being held in Dubai aimed at bringing together leaders and decision-makers to create an action agenda focused on e-Learning quality throughout the region.

The Oman and Emirates Investment Holding Company, with technical assistance from the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology of India, is setting up a training centre to meet the demand for technical manpower in Oman's expanding plastics industry, reported Khaleej Times. The Plastics Technology Training and Development Centre (PTTDC), the first of its kind in the Gulf, will be located in Sohar. Although primarily aimed at Omanis, the proposed centre will also admit national and expatriate students from all over the region.
Qatar University and Durham University (UK) have signed an agreement to strengthen academic ties between the two institutions, reported the Peninsula. The agreement will strengthen research links between the two universities, initially in international relations and Islamic studies but extending also into education, geography and environmental sciences, law, finance and energy.
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Saleh Ba-Sorah, along with Minister of Education Abdul-Salam al-Jawfi, held discussions with the visiting Speaker of Canadian Senate Noel Kinsella educational cooperation between the two countries, reported Saba. In the meeting, the two ministers reviewed educational developments, in general, and higher education, in particular. They affirmed concern of enhancing educational ties between the Yemeni and Canadian universities as well as possibilities of opening branches for the Canadian universities in Yemen.
