UAE MoE has a secret plan

A spokesperson for the UAE's Ministry of Education (MoE) said that the ministry will soon introduce a secret informer mechanism in its policies, reported Khaleej Times. He added that informers could be anyone from a parent to an MoE official, or anybody else who will pay random visits to the schools to check on the quality of services provided to the students. The new measure was disclosed by the Director-General of the MoE, at the meeting with principals of the future schools from all emirates. Moreover, the director assured that the ministry would also undergo other reforms to enhance performance of schools.

Rajagiri opens in Dubai

Rajagiri and Sudhir Gopi Holdings have opened the first of its schools in Dubai named Rajagiri International School, reported Khaleej Times. The school is located in Warqaa area of Dubai to be managed by Rajagiri Province of CMI congregation and facilitated by the UAE based Sudhir Gopi Holdings Inc.

Qatar to get a German school

A new German school is being planned in Qatar, reported Gulf Times. The German embassy, in co-operation with the German Business Council Qatar, intends to establish Deutsche Schule Doha. Plans suggest the opening of a pre-school and possibly the first classes of primary school for the winter semester 2008.

Microsoft extends education partnerships

During his visit to the Government Leaders Forum - Arabia in Abu Dhabi, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates announced a number of partnerships aimed at driving IT development in Arabian countries. These include strategic partnerships between the Mohammed Bin Rashid Foundation and Microsoft to promote IT research via a "knowledge platform", and with the Dubai Cares organization to establish a further education programme for teachers and parents. Microsoft will also provide free email, messaging and online storage facilities to 650,000 high-school students in Oman in an arrangement similar to one the company recently set up with the Jordanian Universities Network.

SQU issues first doctorate

Sutan Qaboos University has marked a milestone in its transition from a teaching to a research university by awarding its first Ph.D., reported Khaleej Times. The proud recipient is Ali Salim Al Rajhi after the examining committee last week discussed and approved his geology thesis titled '3D Modelling of the Sur Tertiary Basin', in Oman's eastern Sharqiya region.

Bill Gates signs education accord with UAE

Microsoft founder Bill Gates, on his first visit to the Gulf, signed an agreement with a Dubai-based charity on Sunday to launch a knowledge portal in the Arab world, reported AFP. The initiative aims to "serve as a gateway to world-class knowledge," and includes the creation of a database of digital Arabic research to provide a backbone for the foundation's work, Microsoft said.

International accreditation for schools urged

Lesley Stagg, chairperson of the European Council of International Schools and principal of the Dubai-based Greenfield Community School, said the best way for UAE schools to achieve world class education standards is to move towards international accreditation, reported Khaleej Times. Speaking at the Global Education Forum, Stagg said accreditation is not very expensive, as it is done on a school-based, self evaluation model. She added that accreditation is a way of assuring parents that their children are in a school which meets at least the minimum set of standards.

Emiratis join hospitality sector

The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing has implemented a nine-week 'Maharat' hospitality training programme for UAE nationals, many of whom are now employed by global hotel chains. The number of UAE nationals working in the hotel industry has crossed the 700 mark from 15 in 2002. The project is supported by Accor, Hyatt International, Jebel Ali International, Jumeirah, Rotana, Shangri-La, Sheraton, Dusit, InterContinental, Fairmont, Hilton, Kempenski Mall of the Emirates, and Le Royal Meridien.

UAE revamps education system

The UAE's Minister of Education Hanif Hassan has stated that his ministry planned to revamp the education system in the country at all levels to enhance not only the output but also students' personalities. According to Khaleej Times, he said the development of education was based on certain factors. These included the efficient preparation of students so that they could effectively thrive using modern technology. The second was about modern techniques of instruction and methodology. Adopting modern curricula with assorted and non-monotonous means of training and evaluation were important, Hassan stressed.

CIBT opens new education center

CIBT Education Group reports that its subsidiary, CIBT School of Business & Technology, has signed an agreement to establish a CIBT Vocational and Education Center at the Lianyungang Teachers College (LTC) in Lianyungang City, China. Lianyungang is a major coastal city and is a rising center for industry, foreign trade and tourism in eastern China. Abu Dhabi JV to boost school services

The Abu Dhabi Education Council and the Abu Dhabi Education Zone have joined forces to provide better services to students and schools in the emirate, reported Khaleej Times. ADEC had recently signed an MoU with the Ministry of Education to transfer the supervision of ADEZ from the ministry to the ADEC. Director-General of ADEC Mubarak Al Shamsi said ADEZ would serve as a focal point to provide all the required services and help to schools, students, teachers and parents.

Education forum kicks off in Dubai

Leading education officials from throughout the Middle East are in Dubai this week to attend a leading-edge forum which is expected to assist in setting a new education agenda for the region. Ministry and NGO officials from Bahrain, Yemen, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia will be at the Gulf Education Forum, which runs at the Madinat Arena from January 21-23. The forum will examine key issues impacting the education industry in the region.

Lack of funds for UAE special needs pupils

An initiative to integrate the first four UAE pupils with Down's syndrome into a public kindergarten has been cancelled due to lack of funds, reported Gulf News. Although the initiative was initially successful, at the beginning of the second term the project suffered repeated failure, resulting in its cancellation. Three of the special-needs pupils have been left without any form of schooling.

YAL launches student program

Maha Al-Ghunaim, President of YAL- Kuwait chapter announced the launch of a training program with an initiative of bringing together Kuwaiti and foreign students in the private sector, reported Kuwait Times. The 'Internship and Exchange Program' will allow students to exchange their knowledge and capabilities within the Kuwaiti's various organizations and universities, given that Kuwait's private sector is one of the best and strongest sectors in the region in terms of size and experience.
