HSBC to sponsor 150 students at UAE college

Zayed University and HSBC Bank Middle East Limited have signed an agreement for a student scholarship program to financially support female students from the university's Abu Dhabi and Dubai campuses. Under the agreement, HSBC will provide 150 female students with internship and job opportunities, and a salary of Dhs2000.

New primary school set to open in Doha

Loydence Academy, a new international school, will start receiving students in the Qatari capital, Doha from October 18, the Gulf Times has reported. Initially, the school will have classes for pre-school, reception and Year 1. Later it will offer education for the full primary range. The new school will offer full curriculum with the addition of Arabic and Islamic studies, the school principal, David Guy said.

Schools in Northern Emirates to be assessed

The UAE's Ministry of Education, in partnership with the Centre for British Teachers Education Trust, will begin assessments of 69 public schools and two private schools in the northern Emirates in two weeks to determine whether they meet minimum requirements in areas such as health and safety, student attainment and school leadership, The National has reported. Schools passing the inspection will be accredited by the Ministry.

Emirates Foundation offers science grants

The Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy has said it will provide grants for original, innovative research proposals which focus on Science, Engineering and Information Technology development issues, Wam has reported. The grants, which will be provided over a maximum period of two years, are part of a project that aims to enhance the presence and role of science-based organizations working for the betterment of UAE society, the foundation has said. The due date for submission of research proposals is November 1, 2009. The proposals will be evaluated by external reviewers and awards will be announced by November 30, 2009.

Saudi cleric fired for criticizing new university

A top Saudi cleric who demanded that religious scholars should vet the curriculum at a new mixed-gender university has been removed from his duties as a member of a top council of religious scholars, the state news agency SPA said on Sunday. King Abdullah gave no reason for the move, but the decision came after the cleric, Sheikh Saad al-Shithri, had said scholars should vet the curriculum at the new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to prevent alien ideologies such as 'evolution', Reuters has reported.

RAK medical school to offer master's degrees

Graduate courses are to be introduced at the Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health Sciences University in the UAE within a year. Director of Finance and Administration, M Riazuddin, said the university's College of Medical Science will be the first to introduce a post graduate degree, reported Gulf News.

UAE to shut schools without nurses

The UAE's ministry of education has said that schools will be closed if they fail to hire nurses trained to conduct screening of students for possible swine flu infection, Khaleej Times has reported. The education and health ministry will conduct surprise inspections to detect erring schools and cancel their licenses immediately, the ministry said. Students of violating schools will be distributed to other schools and erring schools will have to incur the moral and financial damages from their non-compliance, the ministry added.

UAE schools safe from H1N1, says ministry

The UAE's Ministry of Education has said that all schools in the country are safe from swine flu. It has said that the country can fight the illness and that the H1N1 vaccine is safe. In a TV and radio broadcast, Education Minister Dr Humaid Al Qutami said that measures were in place for when a case of swine flu is discovered in a school.

UAE school fee hike guidelines still pending

The UAE Ministry of Education has said that there are no universal guidelines yet for the raising of school tuition fees in the country, Emirates Business 24/7 has reported. According to Abdullah Al Amiri, Advisor to the UAE Minister of Education, there is no 'implemented step' on fee increases. "The step that we have as per the ministry is based on accomplished inflation data, so if it's 5% then it is five, if it is 10 then you can go up to 10, but there should be proper criteria," he said.

American University inks Edexcel deal

The American University (AUE) in the Emirates has signed an articulation agreement with Edexcel, the UK's largest awarding body. As part of the agreement, AUE will grant holders of Edexcel BTEC HNDs credit toward the relevant Associate or Bachelor's programmes. The agreement will apply to all present and future degree programmes offered by the university, AUE has said in a statement.

Qatar French school inks Sorbonne deal

French school in Qatar (Voltaire) has signed an agreement for cooperation with the Sorbonne university, Gulf Times has reported. According to the agreement, the Sorbonne in Paris will accept 30 students annually from the Qatari-French School. The deal covers cooperation in legal, economic and administrative sciences.

Qatar to launch student mass vaccine programme

Qatar's Supreme Council of Health (SCH) has announced it is all set to launch a 10-day mass seasonal flu vaccination campaign all for all school students next week, the Gulf Times has reported. However, the vaccine will not be administered without the consent of parents, SCH has said. A total of 500,000 doses of the vaccine will be available for the campaign.

Abu Dhabi launches Future Schools Design Competition

Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), in partnership with the Building Schools Exhibition and Conference - Middle East and North Africa (BSEC Mena), has launched the Future Schools Design Competition for students to develop school designs over a series of phases of the competition. The three-phase competition involves participating schools developing a journal outlining the goals of their project. It also requires students to learn about sustainable practices which they will be encouraged to apply to their design, and to work with Abu Dhabi-based architects to help them plan for the creation of a model. The winning designs will be displayed at the Building Schools Exhibition and Conference-Middle East and North Africa (BSEC Mena), which will be staged at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) on December 13 and 14, 2009.

Dubai schools ask parents for feedback

Dubai parents are being asked to evaluate their children's school through an online questionnaire on the Knowledge and Human Development Authority's (KHDA) website. Over 200,000 parents are expected to give their report card before officials from the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau visit the institutions for the second cycle of inspections starting on October 4. The online questionnaire includes 20 questions which range from how happy the child seems, to what transport they use to get to and from school. Parents are asked complete the questionnaire within seven days to rate the teaching of Islamic Education, Arabic, mathematics and science, and give any other comments they wish to make.
