Oil slides more than $3
- Oil prices have fallen more than $3 on Friday as the US dollar showed further strength, Reuters has reported. Oil market declines were attributed to an uptick in OPEC crude oil output and an expected decline in US travel over the Sept. 1 Labor Day holiday weekend.

Kuwait extends date for bids on contract
- Kuwait is extending the date to close bids for a contract to build a 2,000-megawatt power station in Subbiya to Oct. 7 from Aug. 17 after foreign companies requested more time, Khalid al-Wasmi, assistant undersecretary at the Ministry of Electricity and Water told Bloomberg. The project will cost about $2.6bn.

Oil rises for a third day
- Oil rose to $117 a barrel in New York today as traders worried that Russian crude may be disrupted after the US agreed to build a missile-defense system in Poland and the conflict in Georgia has halted supplies from the Caspian Sea, reported Bloomberg. Crude oil for October delivery rose as much as $1.44, or 1.3 percent, to $117 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange and was trading at $116.83 at 2:30 p.m. in Singapore

Masdar begins work on $230m photovoltaic plant
- Masdar, a renewable energy company owned by the Abu Dhabi government, has announced that it has begun work on a $230m photovoltaic production plant in Ichterhausen, Germany. The 70 megawatt plant, part of Masdar's plan to invest $2bn in thin-film photovoltaic manufacturing, will open in the third quarter of 2009, the company said in a statement.

Kuwait to invest $1.3bn in power generation
- Kuwait plans to install $1.3bn worth of power-generation equipment in a bid to raise output by 7.9% as energy demand soars, reported Bloomberg. The country is building four new gas and steam turbines, one generator and three distillers at the Shuaiba North power station, said Mohammed Boshehri, a planning director at the Ministry of Electricity and Water. The new power capacity is needed to boost manufacturing, develop new industries such as tourism and meet demand from expanding residential developments.

Iraq to sign $1.2bn deal with China
- Iraq will sign a $1.2bn oil service contract with China to replace a production-sharing deal agreed under Saddam Hussein, Iraqi oil minister Hussain al-Shahristani told Iraq's an-Noor newspaper. The oil minister is travelling to China at the end of this month to discuss the deal, which was orginally signed in 1997 between Iraq and the China National Petrolium Company. If finalised, the revised deal would be the first oil service contract signed by the new Iraqi government since the fall of Saddam in 2003.

Oil falls for a fourth day
- Crude oil fell for a fourth day in New York yesterday amidst forecasts that Tropical Storm Fay will miss rigs and platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, and as the stronger dollar limited the appeal of commodities, reported Bloomberg. Crude oil for September delivery fell as much as $1.23, or 1.1%, to $111.64 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, and traded at $112.24 at 12:08 p.m. London time.

Qatar to cut gas emissions
- Qatar has become the first GCC country to join a World Bank programme to bring down its greenhouse gas emissions, reported the Peninsula. The programme aims to drastically reduce the gases by controlling gas flaring. Qatar is expected to reduce 13,734 tMCO2e by year 2012.
