The IMF and World Bank meetings in Dubai from 17-25 of this month will cause some disruption to traffic in the centre of the city. The Dubai Police asked local residents to use internal roads as the main arteries would be more in demand. However, the rumours about parts of the city being sealed off are completely untrue.

Gibbs Technologies unveiled its amphibious car in a demonstration on London's River Thames yesterday. The convertible car has no doors and a steering wheel in the middle. It can reach 161kph on land and 48kph on water, and costs USD235,000. Only 100 are being built.
Land Rover has reported a 42 per cent hike in GCC sales in the first seven months of the year. Range Rover sales led the advance with a 52 per cent rise while the Discovery model sales advanced by 44 per cent. The all-new Freelander model is due to arrive later this year.
DaimlerChrysler Middle East has appointed Nicholas Speeks as its new President and CEO. He has been working for DaimlerChrysler for 24 years, most recently in Poland where he was responsible for the car and van division.

Standby for the biggest annual European car show in Frankfurt next week. New models are expected from the top German manufacturers which have weathered the global economic slowdown of recent years surprisingly well. BMW and Mercedes sales are still very strong, while only Porsche has felt the impact of the Wall Street blues.
The 250 luxury Audi A8 limousines to ferry VIPs around during the Dubai 2003 events later this month are due to arrive later this week. The Audis will become a feature of the roads of Dubai during the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank in the city.

Iran has reversed a decision to allow the importing of foreign-made cars, just days after lifting the ban, reported AFP. Only last week Mitsubishi, Toyota, BMW, Hyundai and Lada were named as the first importers. All Iranian cars are presently made under licence from foreign manufacturers very much like Eastern Europe before the end of communism.

Porsche has launched a slower version of its 4x4 Cayenne. The new model with a V6 Volkswagen engine takes 9.1 seconds to move from 0-100kph. It will be available first in Europe from November with a price tag of USD44,500. This is the slowest Porsche vehicle to be manufacturered since the 1970s.
Dubai and northern emirates' dealer for Nissan, Arabian Automobiles Co., has set itself a target to raise sales by 30 per cent with the new Nissan Sunny. It is now available for sale at company showrooms. AAC claimed that Sunny remains the number one selling car in its class during a briefing to key fleet operators on the 2004 model.

Hertz in Yemen has teamed up with SriLankan Airlines, Saudi Arabian Airlines and Gulf Air, to offer the three airlines' frequent flyers, car rental incentives when they visit Yemen. Benefits include 500 free miles for each Hertz rental. Hertz operates through Universal Rent a Car in Yemen.
A study on road safety being conducted by Dubai Municipality will be completed by September. The Pedestrian and Bicyclists Study will lead to a manual of guidelines and policies so that any new roadworks and highways that would come up in new areas of Dubai, would provide proper facilities for individuals and those using manual transport.
