Sharjah Police has formed a patrol orientation unit that can track a car's location by the GPS system linked to satellites. A control system involving security cameras has also been set up. Meanwhile, the police has called on the public not to block roads at accident sites out of curiosity as that seriously hampers rescue work.
Private Iranian automaker Bahman Khodro is to produce 3,000-5,000 units of Japanese Mitsubishi Motors' Pajero from 2004.The company would produce both standard and luxury models of the four wheel drive Pajero,according to Mohammed- Reza Soroush head of the company.
The new Jeep Cherokee Red River edition, of which there are only 23 more, has been introduced in the UAE. The limited edition four-wheel drive comes with speed control, fog lamps,leather steering wheel, aluminium wheels, fender flares, Renegade seats, apart from the standard features of a Cherokee.
To make UAE roads safer, it has been suggested that road safety and first aid be taught in schools as part of the curricula, Khaleej Times quoted an Abu Dhabi police paper. The study asked for involvement of UAE Red Crescent Society, youth clubs, womens associations and summer camps. Road accidents are a major cause of deaths in the Gulf.

Abu Dhabi Municipality will buy 77 new smaller buses in a fleet revamp. It is part of a wider effort to upgrade public transport and connect all suburbs. It will install modern ticketing machines as part of the project. The organisational structure too will be revamped and staff reduced by 52 per cent
Dubai Municipality has launched the e-go bus card and will phase out the monthly passes currently used by commuters by the end of August. The pre-paid electronic card is reloadable and comes with a 10 per cent introductory discount. It costs USD1.35 plus USD24 for a month's validity which can be renewed. Officials feel that the card will encourage bus travel thus easing road congestion.
The Middle East Motor Show is practically sold out with seven halls covering more than 30,000sqm at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre fully booked. Over 45 leading car manufacturers and designers from North America, Europe and Asia have confirmed participation. The show will be held from December 11-15.
Abu Dhabi will lay down a 350km road network in Al Falah and Al Shamikha areas of the emirate at a cost of USD121m. Meanwhile, several roads in Sharjah will be paved, following the construction of a sewage network in these areas. The plan also includes establishing an internal transportation system.
Dubai has got tough with unlicensed private taxis operating car pools, claiming that Dubai Transport has lost up to USD5.5m to such operators. Violaors are fined USD675 for the first offence and USD1,350 for each repeat offences. Action is also being taking against on-call taxis operating without meters.
Dubai Police will install more touch sceens at various location in the city to provide wider access to its 17 new traffic services by the public. Tourist certificates for vehicles, ownership certificates and replacment of lost certificates are some of the available facilities.

Dubai police has launched a road safety campaign that will run till the end of August. As part of the awareness drive, posters and other road safety materials are being distributed across the emirate. Speed and drunken driving are two major causes of road accidents and the police is seeking public involvement to create more awarenes.
Dubai Transport said it has completed 1,665,372 trips by June on its inter-emirates bus services linking Dubai to the rest of the emirates. In June itself, it conducted 7,127 trips carrying 221,248 passengers. Four new routes have been added to Sharjah from various parts of Dubai.
