Omani roads claim five lives

Omani roads have claimed five lives and injured another 96 persons in just the week between July 26 and August 1, Royal Oman Police reported. It said 54 accidents were reported from around the country during the week. Speeding is a major cause of accidents, often fatal, in the Gulf.

Sharjah-Ajman route under repair

Sharjah Police has urged motorists to use alterante routes to Ajman, following the partial closure of the interconnecting Al Orouba Road for a month. Closure for repair works affects the stretch from Al Khaleej Square to Rashid bin Khadim Square.

130 new Mercedes buses for DM

Dubai Municipality has sourced 130 new high end Mercedes buses from Gargash Enterprises in a deal valued at USD16.3m. The vhicles will be used to transport the participants for the IMF-World Bank anual meetings in Dubai in September. Later, they will join the municipality's city bus service.

Renew UAE licences online

Drivers in the UAE can already renew their driving licences in many local shopping malls, reported Gulf News. But within a month this service is to move online, said Dubai Police officials. Thus any major credit card will facilitate the renewal of local driving licences from any Internet access point anywhere in the world.

The Islamic Insurance and Reinsurance Company has entered a three-year contract with the Arabian Automobile Association to provide emergency roadside assistance. Aman customers will have full access to emergency roadside assistance throughout the UAE.

Dubai 1234 plate, USD20,000

The Dubai car number plate 1234 sold for more than USD20,000 at an auction held by the Dubai Traffic Department this week. Another popular number was 9990 which sold for USD8,000. A total of 97 four-digit number plates were auctioned.

UAE, aggressive car finance

The UAE car finance market is more and more aggressive with bank margins very tight, reported Gulf News. The top five players have 60 per cent of the market and present rates are down to between four and five per cent. Dubai Islamic Bank has the lowest rate at 3.85 per cent.

Peugeot to add new models

The restyled Peugeot 206 will be available in the UAE within 30 days and two more sports versions of its hatchback, Jeremy Weatherill of local distributor Swaidan Trading Company told Gulf News. He said the new 307 coupe/cabriolet will be launched at the Dubai Motor Show later this year.

Dubai seatbelt campaign

The Dubai Police have issued a strong warning to motorists to belt-up to save lives. There is a Dhs100 fine for not wearing a seatbelt in Dubai which also carries three black points in the traffic record book. A spokesman said people should realise that the safety belt is there to stop them flying through their own windscreen.

General Motors has launched its new Epica and Aveo models in the UAE. The Epica is a 2-litre, 129 bhp, saloon with power steering, electric mirrors and tinted glass from USD11,200.
