European car prices are up by 10-15 per cent since the summer due to the collapse of the US dollar and the consequent increased cost of imported cars priced in euros. Japanese marques have also become more expensive. Dealers said they could not hold price levels any longer.

The Abu Dhabi Municipality is cracking down on illegal used car sales where owners leave a for sale sticker on their parked cars, reported Gulf News. Officials said cars which violate the rules will be towed away during the Eid holiday. At least 20 cars have been impounded in the past six weeks.

Dubai Police have added extra patrols to cope with the expected Eid holiday rush, and have urged motorists to be on their best behavoir for the holiday period. Last Eid the department attended more than 1,000 road accidents. A spokesman reminded drivers of the virtues of patience and being courteous as well as observing the rules of the road.

General Motors General Manager Paul R. Johnson told Gulf News the US auto giant intends to double regional sales from 50,000 to 100,000 in the next five years. He said that is why GM has expanded its product range into the entry level. GM is already growing by 15-20 per cent a year, he added.

A Saudi woman saved a life when she broke the law to drive seven people wounded in the November 8 suicide bombing to a hospital, reported AFP. Saba Abu Lisan was stopped by the authorities but then escorted to the hospital in view of the circumstances, and a pregnant woman's life was saved. Under Saudi law women are not allowed to drive.
