Chronic traffic problems have necessitated a full-fledged media unit at Dubai Traffic Police, whose main task would be to better PR with the motoring public. Traffic Police officials hope to get air time on TV and radio to present traffic rules and safety awareness materials. They have, in the past, used email, mobile phones and ATMs to spread the message.

Bahrain's Formula 1 project is speeding ahead and is likely to be fully operational by April 2004. It will bring a Grand Prix course to the Mideast as well as cater to all other forms of car and motorbike racing. Bahrain has awarded a USD13m contract to Siemens to ensure the latest electronic systems.
A five-lane dual carriageway across the Dubai Creek is part of major road overhaul plans. Work on the Ras Al Khor Crossing is due to start in July to be completed by 2006, Gulf News said. The third bridge joins Shindagha Tunnel and Al Maktoum and Al Garhoud bridges as cross over points.

There may yet be some solution to the traffic bottleneck between Sharjah and Dubai. The Dubai Municipaility has agreed to reconsider reopening of the Al Mamzar Interchange on Al Ittihad Road after a two-month study, that however, will only be carried out in February.

Drivers in Morocco are shunning locally made cars in favour of imported ones, even though the marque and model may be the same. Sales of locally produced cars dropped 15 per cent in the first nine months. In contrast, sales of imported cars stayed stable with Renault at the top followed by Peugeot, Toyota and Honda.
At the launch of the new Grand Vitara XL-7 2004, dealer Al Rostamani Trading said new Suzuki showrooms are being opened in Dubai and Sharjah. The XL-7 has a 2.7lt V6 engine with a 5-speed auto transmission. It offers flexible options for seating and storage.

Cars are in demand this Ramadan in Ajman and Sharjah. Ajman and Sharjah City Centres are offering 4 GMC Yukons and up to USD27,000 on purchases. Sharjah's Al Taawun Mall is offering buyers a Chevrolet Epica while the Sahara Centre has put up three Nissan Pathfinders on a purchase-linked raffle.

There will be major diversions of traffic at Interchange 3 of UAE's Sheikh Zayed Road from mid-November until the completion of the project. USD26m is being spent to replace the Al Manara Interchange. Work on it has begun and will take 16 months to complete. Alternative roads are being prepared.

Sharjah plans a major switch to compressed natural gas from next year to partly replace the use of petrol in cars. CNG is a more efficient and cleaner fuel, and is also cheaper. Cars and vehicles used by Sewa will first be converted in a multi-phase project covering the emirate.

Thirty cars and motorbikes have been brought from diverse locations as Europe, Australia and Japan by GAC for the UAE Desert Challenge, which kicks off on Octber 29 on Palm Jumeirah. The four-stage five-day event will cross some of the toughest terrain in the Middle East.
