Dubai Police are confiscating the cars of bad drivers for one week as a penalty for weaving through busy traffic, for example. Gulf News reported that Dubai Police issued 35 tickets for traffic violations in 10 minutes yesterday at the start of the latest crackdown. Driving on the hard shoulder means a month's confiscation and Dhs400 fine.

The highway from Sharjah to Dubai is to be tolled, reported Gulf News. Drivers will have to pay Dhs3 to Dhs5 per journey to use the road, and the toll system is now out to tender. This system is apparently rather like the Congestion Charge on commuters coming into London.

DaimlerChrysler and General Motors are joining forces to jointly develop new hybrid engines to compete with their Japanese rivals. Hybrids use an electric motor and an internal combustion engine, with cars running on batteries at low speeds and automatically recharging.
Nissan has chosen the Middle East as the first market outside of North America to launch its Infiniti lineup. Early 2005 the new range of Infiniti cars and luxury 4x4s will be available including the FX crossover and G35 sports sedan and coupe. The Infiniti brand has been represented in the Middle East since 2002 through limited imports of the Q45 luxury sedan.
