Oman, bad driving initiative

Oman is to establish a National Safe Driving Training Centre near Muscat in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police in an effort to crackdown on bad driving. Petroleum Development Oman is to fund the USD2m centre and present it to the police on National Day next year.

New Cadillac CTS-V

The 2005 Cadillac CTS-V is about to arrive in the region, and boasts a huge 400 bhp, V8 engine. This car is a rival to the new 300C from Chrysler which is eagerly awaited by US car enthusiasts. General Motors said the CTS-V is the first in a series of high performance Cadillacs that it plans to offer the market.

Ford Focus, UAE sales up 50pc

The Ford Focus has boosted sales in the UAE by 50 per cent over the past year, said officials. The award-winning compact European car has the longest wheelbase in its class, and a choice of three body styles. UAE dealers are Al Tayer Motors and Premier Motors.

ABPC warns on fake auto parts

The Middle East's Automotive Brand Protection Coalition has launched an English language website and is distributing 30,000 leaflets warning about the dangers of buying fake automobile parts. Officials said that fake parts could prove fatal in accidents, citing the example of windscreens which offer no protection.

Mohammed, action on traffic jams

Dubai Crown Prince General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has urged the Dubai Traffic Committee to draw up plans for a flyover on the Sheikh Zayed Road to ease traffic congestion at the Dubai Internet City. He also ordered a study for the widening of the Garhoud Bridge and an interchange linking the airport to the Emirates Road, according to Gulf News.

Pre-iftar accidents surge

Dubai Police told Gulf News that 185 accidents had been reported in the first three days of Ramadan with the pre-iftar rush a significant part of the problem. Of the 158 accidents in the pre-iftar period from 4.30 to 6pm, eight involved people being run over by speeding vehicles.
