General Motors showcased a range of vehicles with police and military applications at Milipol Qatar 2004, an exhibition of equipment for armed forces and emergency services. GMC launches Envoy XL 4x4

GMC has launched the Envoy XL 4x4 in the Middle East. The vehicle shares some technology with Chevrolet's rival 4x4, the TrailBlazer EXT, including the new Vortec Gen IV 5.3-litre V8 engine. GMC and Chevrolet are both owned by General Motors. Both 4x4s feature GM's innovative Displacement on Demand technology.

Researchers unveil smart car

UAE University and IBM Middle East unveiled a prototype of a car safety device that can send voice alerts to the driver via 'smart box' technology. The technology can alert drivers when they are passing the speed limit on a particular street, and link up with police stations to issue fines for speeding offences.

Trainees complete auto course

Some 200 Saudi nationals graduated from the Saudi-Japanese Automobile Institute, after studying courses in auto servicing. The Jeddah-based institute aims to make Saudi youth technically qualified in car maintenance. SJAI officials said there was strong demand for qualified automotive engineers in the Kingdom.

Enoc signs 15-year Avis deal

Emirates National Oil Company has signed an exclusive 15-year deal with Avis UAE to provide the car rental group with all lubricants for its fleet, include luxury and chauffeur drive services. The contract, with Enoc subsidiary Epcco Lubricants, will cover supplies for Avis's daily and short term car rentals as well as long term leasing and bus services.
