Hummer H3 arrives in Bahrain
Hummer distributor for Bahrain, the National Motor Company, will be selling the 2006 Hummer H3 from 15 August. The H3 is the more compact and cheaper model of the Hummer range, with prices starting from about $34,000. Bahrain will be the first country in the region to receive the vehicle.
SBIG spearheads Ford in Libya
Jordan-based Shaheen Business and Investment Group will open a Ford dealership in Tripoli after being appointed the car manufacturer's importer responsible for sales, service and distribution for Libya. The facility will feature a sales and parts centre, customer services centre, and a 50,000 sqft workshop, and a body and paint shop.
Radars target speed
Oman has installed more than 200 radars and traffic cameras throughout the nation in an effort to stem the number of road deaths. More than 50 people die every month as a result of road accidents, of which 70% are caused by speed, according to the Royal Oman Police. In 2004, 637 people were killed and 6,636 injured as a result of accidents.
Range Rover for 2006 arrives
UAE distributor for Land Rover Al Tayer Motors is now taking bookings for the new Range Rover for 2006. The Range Rover Vogue Supercharged leads the line-up, powered by a 4.2-litre V8 engine which delivers 35% more power than the previous engine at 400 bhp. It also has a new front bumper design, new headlamps and tail-lights, 20-inch alloy wheels and a modified mesh-design front grille and power vents for the Supercharged model.
BMW, 24-hr road assistance
AGMC, the exclusive importer of BMW Group motor cars in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates has introduced BMW roadside assistance which will operate 24 hrs year-round through a team of BMW-trained mechanics. The service is available under the BMW new vehicle warranty or certified pre-owned BMW protection plan.
Tasjeel, international licences
Tasjeel, the vehicle testing and registration JV between Emirates National Oil Company and Dubai Police, has started issuing international driving licences. The company has been authorised to issue the licences by the Automobile and Touring Club for the UAE, the only UAE club affiliated to the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile and the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme.
DaimlerChrysler, new VP
DailmlerChrysler Middle East has appointed American Trent Barcroft as the new VP sales and marketing for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge in the region. Barcroft succeeds Bruce Ohms who has returned to the US.
Antique car exhibition
BurJuman shopping centre in Dubai is staging an antique car exhibition which features classic cars dating back to 1913. The exhibition runs until August 5 and is showing a 1971 Mercedes, a 1936 Bentley, two Morgans from 1913 and 1914 and a jeep from the Second World War.
Fuel cell plans abandoned
Toyota Motor Corp. and General Motors will scrap a planned fuel-cell vehicle joint venture over a disagreement on technology sharing, according to an AFP report. But the world's top two automakers will continue their cooperation on research and development in environmental technology for cars.
Nissan sales up 53% in GCC
Nissan Middle East claims record sales during the first quarter of fiscal year 2005, with a 53% growth in GCC sales between April and June. No actual sales figures were given. The results confirm that Nissan and its regional dealers are on track towards achieving their contribution towards Nissan's global target of achieving an additional 1m vehicle sales by September 2005.
BMW body and paint repair shop
AGMC, the exclusive importer for BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, has opened its new state-of-the-art body shop in Dubai. It will substantially reduce the time taken for service and accident repairs, said AGMC GM Stathis I. Stathis.
UAE bourse fall worries traders
Car dealers in the UAE are concerned by the recent slump in local share prices. They note that some recent buyers of expensive cars have been traders from the local bourse. However, used-car dealers are waiting to offer cash to traders in need of liquidity and downsizing.
Hyundai H1 up 59%
UAE agent Juma Al Majid has announced a 59% surge in sales of Hyundai vehicles in the first half of 2005 but failed to provide actual numbers. Officials said the high level of growth was expected to continue into the second half of the year.
2006 Land Cruiser GXR
Al-Futtaim Motors, distributor for Toyota, Lexus and Hino in the UAE has introduced the 2006 model Toyota Land Cruiser. The GXR model features full-time 4WD, previously available only in the VXR range. Touch screen voice navigation with a rear view camera and Bluetooth capability has been introduced in the top of the range VXR model, and a new key-free entry system is now available in the GXR and VXR.
New Porsche Mideast MD
The new Managing Director of Porsche Middle East & Africa Deesch Papke hosted a lunch for journalists today. The 43 year old South Africa succeeds Mark Bishop who is now head of Porsche in China. November 26 is the date set for the much anticipated mid-range Cayman S, he revealed.
