Motor Show 2005 gears up

The latest releases and developments by global car manufacturers will be on display at the 8th Middle East International Motor Show 2005, running from 12-16 December in Dubai. Middle East countries are seeing a surge in the number of new and used cars being sold annually.

Audi carries Emirates pilots

Audi will supply 50 Audi A6 2.4 Avant vehicles to Emirates Airline, under a partnership deal. The fleet will be used to shuttle pilots to and from Dubai International Airport. The Audi A6 Avant is now available for sale in the Middle East.

Honda Civic 2006 on deck

Honda has released the Honda Civic 2006 YM sedan into the Middle East. Honda claims the car's 1.8-litre i-VTEC Civic engine, which turns out 140 bhp, is as economical as a 1.5-litre motor due to advanced technology. The Civic is available in three variations: the entry level LXi, Exi, and the top range VTi. All three are available in manual or automatic transmission, with ABS optional for the LXi.

2006 Subaru Outback in town

Japanese carmaker Subaru has unveiled its new fourth-generation Outback for 2006 in the Middle East. Available in 2.5i or 3.0R engine versions, the Outback is essentially a Legacy, only 8.7 inches higher up, which is the essence of Subaru's Crossover concept.

Ford targets 50,000 sales

Middle East sales of the Ford Fiesta shot up by 43% in January to November this year, while the all-new Mustang's volume tripled, putting sales on target for 50,000 vehicles for the year. Sales of the Ford Escape SUV also increased about 25% and the Ford Explorer registered 10% growth. The Ford Focus boosted sales by 10% following the introduction of its all-new 2006 model in March this year.

S-Type, installment plan

UAE Jaguar distributors Al Tayer Motors and Premier Motors are offering installments from Dhs2,695 a month on the Dhs142,000 S-Type with zero down payment and 1.99% interest over five years. There is also a five-year unlimited mileage warranty, and three years or 75,000km of free service.

DaimlerChrysler exits Mitsubishi

DaimlerChrysler has sold its 12.4% stake in Mitsubishi Motors, ending its foray into the Far East after just five years. The German car giant said its earnings would benefit by $590m from the sale to a unit of Goldman Sachs.

Al Futtaim presents the Avalon

Al Futtaim Motors, the UAE distributor of Toyota, Lexus and Hino, is now selling the 2006 Toyota Avalon. The flagship Avalon has a V6 3.5-litre engine which powers the new aerodynamic body fitted to a longer wheelbase. It has a push button engine start system, steering wheel-mounted control switches, sports leather upholstery and ventilated front seats.

AA, Renault Megane Hatchback

UAE Renault distributor Arabian Automobiles is now selling the 2006 Renault Megane Hatchback, which comes via the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre models. The new Megane has 16-inch alloy wheels, six airbags, cruise control, ABS with EBD and EBA. It has also been awarded the five-star EuroNCap safety rating.

BMW sticks to Dubai

The German motoring giant BMW has denied media reports that it is considering relocating some of its operations from Dubai. BMW ME MD Guenther Seemann told Gulf News that the company has made a substantial investment in its regional headquarters in Dubai, which is a vibrant regional business hub.

Dubai mulls fourth Creek bridge

Dubai Municipality is considering proposals for a fourth Creek bridge ahead of the existing Maktoum bridge, according to Gulf News. The aim is to relieve chronic traffic congestion. The replacement of the existing Garhoud Bridge and new Ras Al Khor Bridge are in hand.
