Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has revealed that there are 19.7 accident fatalities for every 100,000 residents in Dubai. 42% of those killed in accidents are pedestrians, while 33% of deaths are caused by collisions with other vehicles. 16% of deaths are caused by collisions with stationary objects and 9% by vehicles overturning.

Car buyers in Abu Dhabi will soon be able to register vehicles at dealerships, according to Gulf News. Licensing bodies will set up registration offices at auto showrooms which will be jointly manned by its staff and traffic police. Offices will be electronically linked to vehicle registration data systems.

Nissan's "super ultra-low emission vehicles" accounted for 80% of its Japanese sales in May 2006, Trade Arabia reported. SU-LEVs are rated as having 75% or less nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbon emissions than the level stipulated by Japanese 2005 exhaust emissions standards. The carmaker has 13 models certified as SU-LEVs.

The Camry has been given a longer and wider cabin that makes for more leg and head room, and re-designed suspension for a smoother and quieter ride. A 2.4-litre engine is mated to a new five-speed automatic transmission. Other features include keyless entry, driver and passenger airbags and anti-lock brakes.

Chevrolet dealers in the UAE are warning owners to take their cars to authorised dealer repairers to avoid costly future breakdowns and costs. "Backstreet garages" might offer cheaper services, but often don't use certified technicians, proper tools and authentic parts, and don't provide guarantees, the carmaker said. Chevrolet dealers Al Yousuf, Liberty and Bin Hamoodah are heading the campaign.

Dubai motorists who run red lights will have cars confiscated for a week, Gulf News reported. Cameras have been installed at traffic lights at major intersections around the city, and cars will be seized whether caught on camera or by the police. A fine of Dhs500 will also be imposed.

The new generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class is now selling in Kuwait through local DaimlerChrysler distributors Abdul Rahman Albisher & Zaid Alkazemi Co. The E-Class has a redesigned front-end and a wide range of safety innovations, including flashing brake lights to prevent rear-end collisions. AGMC, BMW distributor for Dubai, Sharjah and the northern emirates, unveiled the latest BMW 3 Series Coupe at its new delivery centre in Dubai on Monday. The car is the first to carry a straight-six cylinder with twin turbocharger. There are two variants, the 325i with a 2.5-litre, 218 bhp engine; or the 335i with twin 3.0-litre, 306 bhp power plant. The 325i costs Dhs185,000 and the 335i is selling for Dhs235,000.

Bahrain Islamic Bank is offering credit facilities to buyers of 2007 model Toyota cars through Montreal Cars Centre, according to Gulf Daily News. Purchases come with a profit rate of 3.75%, no down payment and monthly installments for periods of up to seven years. Salary transfer is not required.
Proton cars will start arriving in Saudi this month through the car's new distributor Riyadh-based Al Rashed & Al Thunayyan Auto Co, according to Malaysian The Star newspaper. Al Rashed expects to sell between 100 and 120 units monthly, and is targeting between 4,000 and 5,000 units annually. Al Rashed has a five year contract to import the Malaysian manufactured car.

The Dubai Department of Civil Aviation has opened a parking and drop off facility for rent a car users. The facility will only offer services to customers of the 19 rent a car companies that have offices inside the airport. Located at the Departures level of the DIA, the facility comprises an office building housing counters for the 19 rent a car firms and a 48 space paid parking area.

The Bahrain Islamic Bank is to offer credit facilities to all buyers wishing to purchase new 2007 Toyotas sold through the Montreal Cars Centre, an authorised Toyota dealership in Bahrain. BIsB will offer repayment periods of up to seven years, with no down payment and no salary transfer requirement. The finance scheme is shariah compliant.
South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai has won a contract worth about $227m to supply vehicles to Iran, reported Reuters. The car maker will ship 13,450 completed vehicles to Iranian governmental agencies and taxi operators. Hyundai's Grandeur and Sonata sedans and its Trajet SUV are included in the deal; the first 1,050 units were dispatched last week.
