Dubai truckers targeted

The Dubai Police is to get tough on truck drivers who commit traffic offences such as dangerous overtaking and risking the lives of other motorists. Punishments include the confiscation of vehicles, heavy fines, criminal prosecution and deportation. The police will also crack down on illegal motorbikes in a bid to reduce the city's soaring accident rate.

Karama delays for drivers

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority is warning the city's motorists of possible disruption and diversions as it commences work on the Dubai Metro station planned for Al Karama. The RTA announced that partial traffic diversions were to be implemented from October 12 between Al Karama junction and Kanoo junction, with full diversions from October 14 between Kanoo junction and Sana junction.

Audi opens customisation studio

Audi has opened a customisation studio in Riyadh, the carmaker said. Consultants will help customers fit out cars from a range of design options such as exterior colours and body kits, standard or sports seats with leather upholstery, contrast stitching and piping, and aluminium and fine wood trims. Materials are imported from Audi Germany.

BMW M6 Convertible debuts

BMW will start rolling out the new M6 Convertible this month. The car carries a V10 power unit with a maximum output of 507bhp. The engine, developed by BMW GmbH and based on BMW's ten-cylinder F1 unit, is connected to a seven-speed Sequential M Gearbox with Drivelogic, and carries the M6 to 100km/h from a standing start in 4.8 seconds.

Ford Qatar fleet deal

Ford Middle East has signed a major deal to supply fleet vehicles to Qatar private transport provider, Mowasalat, also known as The Transport Company. Under the agreement, Mowasalat will take delivery of 1,000 Ford Mondeos, and 675 units of Ford Explorer SUVs, Crown Victoria full-size sedans and Freestar minivans.

Altima Ramadan promotion

Nissan is offering a promotion on new Altimas bought during Ramadan. It includes benefits such as free insurance and registration, and a five-year warranty. Buyers will also be given diamond jewellery or a television set. In Oman, Nissan is holding Qafela, a travelling carnival to showcase its brands.

Toyota, high hopes Corolla

Toyota has introduced the first new version of its Corolla sedan since 2000, adding further pressure on the world's top-ranked car maker General Motors, Bloomberg reported. Toyota expects to sell 12,000 Corollas a month in Japan. It plans to bring the car onto world markets in around a year.

BMW ME Q3 sales up 12%

BMW Group Middle East says sales of its BMW brand in Q3 2006 are up by 12% year-on-year. The car maker sold 3,606 units in the region from July to the end of September, with the new BMW 7 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW X5 and BMW 3 Series driving growth. The BMW M6 Convertible and BMW x3LCI will arrive in Q4; followed by the new BMW X5 and new Mini in 2007.

Sales come with one year free insurance, five years unlimited mileage warranty, five years free roadside assistance and five years or 100,000km free service.

Al Khayyatt offers deals

Al Khayyatt Motors has joined up with the Jordan Investment and Finance Bank to offer payment schemes on new Mazdas and Peugeots during Ramadan. The first option requires a 40% down payment and three interest free equal payments over three years. The second option requires a 15% down payment and monthly instalments over 72 months at 2.75%. The final option offers no down payment, zero interest and 24 monthly instalments.

Kia sales up 5.2% in Q3

Al Majid Motors, the sole distributor for Kia vehicles in the UAE, has announced a 5.2% rise in sales in Q3. Passenger cars contributed 60.7% of the total sales during the nine month period while recreational vehicles, such as 4WDs, and light commercial vehicles contributed 31.9% and 7.4% respectively.

The BMW Group Middle East has launched a dedicated customer magazine called fascination. The publication, initially launched at car showrooms in Dubai, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, is in English and Arabic and features the latest innovations, information and products available at dealerships. It will shortly be available in the remainder of the region.

Road safety push after Eid

The Dubai Police is to organise a road safety campaign after Eid, according to the WAM news agency. The campaign will focus on the safe use of hands-free devices and Bluetooth. A key part of the police's message will be to spread awareness of the dangers of talking on mobile phones while driving.

Gargash opens RAK showroom

Gargash Enterprises, the Mercedes-Benz distributor in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, has opened a sales and service dealership in Ras Al Khaimah. The full Mercedes-Benz range of cars and commercial vehicles will be available, while the dealership will have 25 work bays for servicing and 30 vehicles on display. An ExpressService facility will handle jobs that can be completed within an hour, including repairs for tyres, brakes and exhausts.

CNG option for UAE drivers

In an attempt to get more motorists using cleaner, alternative fuels in their vehicles, 16 sites have so far been selected for the installation of fuel stations that will provide compressed natural gas to drivers. Nine of these 16 stations will be in Abu Dhabi and its surrounding areas, two in Al Ain and five in Sharjah. Nine of the stations will also house CNG conversion workshops.
