Saudi Arabia, which imposes a strict version of Islamic law, is the only country in the world where women are banned from driving. Religious authorities say allowing women to drive would lead to gender-mixing and take women away from their role as mothers.

Brigadier Nasser Al Nuaimi, the DG of the Interior Minister's office in Abu Dhabi, has unveiled additional punishments for the UAE capital's speeding motorists, according to Gulf News. In addition to spending a week behind bars, which was reported here yesterday, violators will also have to clean the city's roads and schools for a further two days. The new ruling has already come into effect.

Dubai traffic police have intensified random checks on roads to identify unregistered drivers and have been issuing more on-the-spot fines, reported Gulf News. Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said there were about 120,000 vehicles on Dubai roads with expired registrations.

Dubai based petrol retailers Emarat and the Emirates National Oil Company are selling diesel at prices 42% higher than those found in Abu Dhabi, reported Gulf News. Ford's 2008 Five Hundred, a full-size sedan, has been launched in Bahrain by Almoayyed Motors, reported the Bahrain Tribune. The model features a 3.5-litre Duratec V-6 engine that can offer 263 NET horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque. The car also includes an MP3 audio input jack.
For the first time a 150-horsepower, double cabin pick-up, produced in the UAE, has been launched in the market by Gulf Automobile Industry Corp priced between Dh36, 000 and Dh60, 000, reported Gulf News. The automobile has about 40 per cent local component, sourced from GCC and Arab countries and is being manufactured in a factory in Abu Dhabi.

A Saudi car registration plate was purchased for 6.4m Saudi riyals ($1.7m) in an auction, reported Gulf News. The traffic department in Riyadh, which organised the auction, collected more than 17 million Saudi riyals from selling car registration plates. The tag number of the priciest registration plate was (AAA-1111).
