Dubai sets up Licensing Agency
- Dubai is setting up a Licensing Agency within the Roads and Transport Authority. Among its roles, it will license and monitor driving institutes and centres and train instructors driving and vehicle and inspectors. The Licensing Agency will be responsible for driving tests and licensing both drivers and vehicles and control the circulation of number plates, including when they come up for public auction. It will also develop and update a database of drivers and vehicles, the issuance of some transport related No Objection Certificates.

Women fuel on economy to lift ban
- Experts in Saudi Arabia said that lifting the ban on women driving in the country would lift the Saudi economy as well, cited Arab News. A report by Saudi Aramco noted that car ownership among Saudi women climbed to 60% between 2003 and 2006, taking the total number of automobiles owned by Saudi women to 120,334. Saudi car industry owners said the ban would also open new different markets to cater to women, once the ban is lifted.

Arab motoring club formed
- Automobile and touring organisations in the Middle East have joined forces and formed the Arab Council of Touring and Automobile Clubs. The organisation has been set up to provide a voice in a range of areas, such as road safety, tourism, traffic, transportation and the environment. It wants to push through improvements for motoring tourists and travellers.

Abu Dhabi builds big BMW showroom
- Abu Dhabi Motors has begun construction of a new showroom in Umm Al Nar district in the UAE capital, said news reports. The exclusive importer of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain eyes the 2-story, 34,100 sqm. state-of-the-art showroom to become the largest BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce showroom in the Middle East. The project costs Dh220m.

- Following its successful world premier at the Middle East International Motor Show in Dubai, makers of Maybach luxury brand said it is adding the Landaulet to its model line-up. Maybach will offer the hand-built Landaulet based exclusively on the customer's own specifications.

- Zayani Motors has opened its leasing showroom for BMW, Land Rover, Mitsubishi and Hyundai in Bahrain. Zayani Leasing offers 24 Hour Emergency Helpline, provision of Saudi Arabia 'No Objection' Letter on request, immediate puncture repair at any Triple K branch and the 'Option to Own' facility where one can own leased cars, pickups, vans, trucks, forklifts and specialist trucks.

Mercedes SUV gets new look
- Mercedes-Benz has launched the second-generation ML-Class. The suv, which has achieved sales of 300,000 worldwide since its launch in 2005, has a new front end with a re-profiled bumper, larger projector beam headlamps, a more prominent three slat grille, and new fog lamps. Changes at the back are more subtle with a new tail lamp lens design and a deeper bumper.

Women rule in Saudi car market
- Despite issues of women driving in Saudi Arabia, market watchers in the country said 15% of Saudi women are buyers in the car market, reported Arab News. Industry reports said women buy one in five luxury sedans. Aljomaih Company said about 480,000 new cars entered the Saudi market last year, 25,000 of which were sold to women. and is expected to jump to 25% in the first year that Saudi Arabia were to lift the driving ban.
