  • VW offers free service checkups

  • Volkswagen Middle East is offering Volkswagen car owners free vehicle check-ups by Volkswagen Service Clinic experts regardless of the model or the year of the car. Volkswagen Middle East aims to rotate the Service Clinic every two years across all 11 markets it covers in the region providing visual check ups and diagnosis for all models. The next Service Clinic will be carried out in Saudi Arabia with the Volkswagen partner, Samaco, from 16 to 28 February making stops in three different locations: Jeddah from 16 to 19 February, Riyadh from 20 to 24 February and Khobar from 25 to 28 February.

  • GM suffers $38.7bn loss

  • General Motors reported a $38.7bn loss for 2007, the largest annual loss ever for an automotive company, and said it is making a new round of buyback offers to US hourly workers in hopes of replacing some of them with lower-paid ones, reported AP. Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said that the company made significant progress in 2007, reducing structural costs in North America, negotiating a historic labour agreement and growing aggressively in Latin America and Asia. GM will not say how many workers it hopes to let go, but under its new contract with the UAW, it will be able to replace up to 16,000 workers doing non-assembly jobs with new employees who will be paid half the old wage of $28 per hour.

  • Bentley Emirates unveils 'world's most exclusive coupe'

  • Bentley Emirates unveiled the new Bentley Brooklands coupé in the UAE in January at an exclusive preview hosted at its Deira Showroom. The British luxury car manufacturer describes the car as 'the world's most exclusive coupé'. The car features the most powerful Crewe-built V8 engine ever produced, developing 530bhp (395kW) and the highest ever torque output of any V8 automotive engine in the world.

  • Audi ME reports 38.2% growth

  • Audi dealers sold 6,380 new vehicles during 2007, up 38.2% over 2006, which will aid Audi globally as the company has its sights set on another record year. During 2007 Audi made significant gains in key markets, including Jordan, Kuwait and Dubai.

  • Nissan employs women in manufacturing plant

  • Nissan Motors, Japan's third-largest carmaker, recently announced that more women have been appointed to its management positions and many of them are now working in the male-dominated manufacturing plants, reported Gulf News. Since 2004, the number of women in Nissan management positions has increased from 36 to 101 and the percentage of women managers in the design, planning and product planning function has doubled. The percentage of female sales staff at Nissan dealerships has likewise increased, and the percentage of women in manufacturing plants has more than doubled.

  • India's car sales drop

  • India's domestic car sales growth slowed sharply in January from a year ago, clocking up annual expansion of 9 per cent, and analysts said only new models and cheaper loans were likely to fuel a pick up in demand, reported Gulf News. India sold 113,899 cars in January, up from 104,501 in the same month a year ago, when sales had jumped 24 percent, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed.

  • Alfardan sales up 25%

  • Qatar's Alfardan Automobiles announced sales growth of 25% in 2007. It posted a rise of 22% for its BMW 7 Series, closely followed by the BMW X5 with 21% increase in sales.
