CAAC to inspect Japanese used cars from Dubai
In a strategic move to ensure safety, Dubai-based Cars Auto Appraisal Centre (CAAC) has been appointed by Japan Export Vehicle Inspection Centre (JEVIC) to inspect all types of used Japanese right hand drive vehicles from Dubai before they are exported to the Republic of Kenya. CAAC, a part of ETA Star Group, will start offering the new service from February 1, 2008.

Gargash leads in Mercedes sales
Gargash Enterprises, general distributor for Mercedes-Benz in Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, has announced that it sold over 5,400 new and used passenger cars in 2007, representing the highest number of vehicles sold by any Mercedes-Benz distributor in the Middle East. The dealer said its sales increased by 10% overall in 2007, and achieved 18% growth in commercial vehicles and more than 20% in after sales.

Corolla price up by 5.9%
Toyota raised the US base price of its Corolla, the world's best-selling small car, by 5.9 per cent after a redesign that includes new engines and chassis and a bigger interior, reported Gulf News. The Standard model of the 2009 Corolla will have a starting price of $15,250.

BMW sales hit record levels
BMW achieved its highest sales ever in the GCC countries with a 14% increase in 2007 over 2006, reported Gulf Times. Similar growth was reflected in overall Middle East sales with a 6% increase, reaching a record figure of 15,150 BMW and Mini units across the region. The top growth markets in the GCC, following Abu Dhabi, were Qatar and Kuwait with 25% and 24% year-on-year increases respectively.

Audi opens new showroom in Qatar
Audi, opened its new showroom on Hamad Bin Suhaim Street in Qatar, reported Gulf News. Audi's official partner in Qatar, Saad Buzwair Automotive (SBA), made a significant investment in building the new showroom. The showroom offers exhibition space, customer parking and a lounge area for customers. The showroom opening also marked the arrival of the Audi R8, which has won numerous awards in recent months, including 'Car of the Year' awarded by Autocar Middle East.

GM LAAM sales up by 19%
General Motors Latin America, Africa and Middle East (GM LAAM) region set an all-time CYTD record in 2007, selling 1,235,913 vehicles, up 200,600 units over 2006. GM's volume increase of 19.4 percent for the year outpaced the industry growth rate for the region. In addition, LAAM's annual market share increased to 17.2 per cent for the year, representing its highest annual share. GM LAAM sold an all-time quarterly record 341,000 units in the fourth quarter of 2007 to propel the growth. This constitutes an 18 percent increase year-over-year.

Dubai first to test GM's green cars
Dubai will be first in the Middle East to test General Motors Corp.'s 'green' cars, as the United Arab Emirates seeks to cast off its reputation as the world's biggest polluter, reported Bloomberg. Mary Beth Stanek, director of environment, energy and safety policy at General Motors said that ten hybrid cars to be tested by Dubai police and taxis next month.
